Looking for records pertaining to a German artillery unit

#1

Post by FendiPop » 02 Jun 2021, 04:34

Hello,

I'm trying to find records relating to a particular German artillery regiment active on the eastern front in 1944. The identification I have for it is 105 11/AR 217 (11 Batterrie Regiment 217). Any help in where I might go to retrieve such information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Not records, but found this in Tessin:
Bei Auflösung der 217. ID wurde am 2. 11. 1943 auch das Rgt. aufgelöst: der Stab des Rgts. und der IV. Abt. traten am 26. 11. 1943 mit Resten der 1., 5.. 7. und 10.-12. Bttr. zum Art.Rgt. 349 der im Westen aufzustellenden 349. Inf.Div.
This is regarding your "in 1944" statement. The above states the regiment was disbanded on 2 November 1943 (as part of the 217. Infantry Division), and a group of batteries, of which the 11. was one, were sent to the 349. Infantry Division, which was being formed in the west.

The "105" is curious as well. As part of the IV. Abteilung, the 11. Battery should have (normally) been a unit equipped with 15-cm (150-mm) pieces, not 105-mm pieces. Not to mention that German practice would have referred to 105-mm pieces as "10.5-cm".

I also wonder if the "11/AR 217" actually refers to II. Abteilung / AR 217.

Cheers
