Archives Normandie 39-45:
http://www.accaan.net/archivesnormandie/rech.php
Only french, including searches - there's NO english.
Great photos, but hard to find. Mostly Overlord and later.
Many blanks.

Collections Canada:
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivi ... 502_e.html
Mostly of Canadian soldiers, operations etc. Some British and other paralell to Canadian interest are also there (German photos of Dieppe British tanks which fought alongside Canadian soldiers etc...).
Great photos, pretty good resolution.
50/50 blanks/photos.

NARA Collections (US Archives):
http://www.archives.gov/research_room/r ... hotos.html
http://www.archives.gov/research_room/r ... war_2.html
First link is WW2 history (simplified) in photographs. Second is photos of black american soldiers, many rarely seen photos, a nice "tribute".
Very high resolution, good photos!
All photos, no blanks - but only 300 photos in total, WW2 related.

NARA Search (US Archives)
http://arcweb.archives.gov/arc/basic_search.jsp
A lot of stuff, very hard to find what you want - Choose a "Type of Archival Materials:" to avoid getting movies you can't download.
Very nice stuff, pretty high resolution on most.
No blanks, but 50% utter garbage to those of us who don't have access to the archives. Filter the crap out and you have a pretty nice archive.

NZ National Archives:
http://www.archives.govt.nz/index.html

NZ National Library 'Timeframes':
http://timeframes1.natlib.govt.nz/
This provides a searchable db of photos from NZ, incl a fairly substantial collection from WWII. Click 'search', the 'advanced search', and narrow it down as you wish. Indexing is not always accurate, but searching by year seems fairly reliable, if a bit painstaking.

Example:
http://timeframes1.natlib.govt.nz/0_DA-05505.scrn

Andy H provided a link for the RFC namely http://www.rfc.rnas-raf-register.org.uk Sadly it's not working. :(

Would anyone know if it's just a temporary fault, or something more permanent?

Good morning Martin and all,

For those needing to leave the research libraries and archives because it's so stuffy inside, sometimes the historical markers next to roads can allow for some fresh air.

At http://www.historical-markers.org is a list of Virginia, USA markers. This site is run by a Jason Watson of Charlottesville, Virginia. Virginia's markers deal with colonial times to the recent. Operation Torch has a sign in Norfolk, Virginia. The small hotel where the operation was planned was torn down a few years ago to make way for more urban blight. All that's left is the road sign.

Warm regards,

Bob

Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte

Post by Patzinak » 03 Apr 2008 03:46

The full run of the Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte (Quarterly Journal of Contemporary History), or VfZ, a publication of the Institut für Zeitgeschichte, is available for downloading in PDF format (1 file/issue) here

http://www.ifz-muenchen.de/heftarchiv.html

A table of contents and author index for the years 1953–2006 is also available

http://www.ifz-muenchen.de/fileadmin/im ... gaenge.pdf

Although this important periodical is in German only, each issue contains an English-language abstract at the end.

Two best on line archives I've found

the US combined arms research library

http://cgsc.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/

Has a lot of ww2 operational documents
(including the CIVIL affairs handbook in depth briefings on economics. Unfortunately mainly Japan and Germany.)

and the league of nations archive
http://www.unog.ch/

had lots and lots economic and population data for between the wars

I thought I'd let all know that JSTOR is now allowing free access to a limited number of its online journals.
The archives of more than 1,200 journals are now available for limited free reading by the public, JSTOR announced today. Anyone can sign up for a JSTOR account and read up to three articles for free every two weeks.

This is a major expansion of the Register & Read program, following a 10-month test, during which more than 150,000 people registered for access to an initial set of 76 journals. The new additions bring more than 4.5 million articles from nearly 800 scholarly societies, university presses, and academic publishers into the Register & Read offerings.
