Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur E(v) or A(o)

#1

Post by CNE503 » 12 Mar 2018, 19:42

Hello,

Is anyone able to explain me the meaning of the E, the A, the (v) and the (o) for a Fliegerhorst-Kommandantur?
And also what is exactly the purpose of a Fliegerhorst unit?

I guess it was some kind of support unit manning an airfield with every kind of specialists (mechanical, cooks, signal guys, etc.) but I'm not sure of what it was exactly.

Thank you for your help.
Regards,

Fliegerhorstkommandantur: Airfield Command or Air Force Station Command or Air Force Base Command
Fliegerhorstkommandantur E: Operational Airfield Command (reduced services for forward airfields)
Fliegerhorstkommandantur E(v): Operational Airfield Command (transferrable)
Fliegerhorstkommandantur A: Airfield Command (full services for rear areas and for controlling several satellite airfields)
Fliegerhorstkommandantur A(o): Airfield Command (stationary or static)

Fliegerhorstkommandanturen and Flugplatzkommandos - Introduction

Notes:
See: http://www.gyges.dk/FlgHrst%20Org.pdf for a detailed breakdown of A(o) 102/XI in 1944-45.
See: p.40 of my 2009 Peter Grimm book, Vliegvelden in Oorlogstijd, for a full organizational breakdown of Fl.H.Kdtr. A 10/XI Eindhoven on 18 Nov 40.

Organization-wide Changes:
c.Mar 41: numbering of all Koflugs that had previously carried a name. (see Holm)
Feb 43: huge realignment and renaming in the Reich that affected Koflugs and brought into existence the numbered Flugplatzkdos. (see Holm)

Kriegsstärkennachweisungen (KStN’s)

1304 a (L): Fliegerhorstkommandantur A(o) [Air Force Station Command A (static)]
1304 e (L): Fliegerhorstkommandantur E(v) [Air Force Station Command E (transferable)]
1305 (L): Fliegerhorstkommandantur E(mot) [Air Force Station Command E (motorized)]
1307 a (L): Flugplatzkommando A [Airfield Detachment A]
1307 b (L): Flugplatzkommando B [Airfield Detachment B]
1307 c (L): Flugplatzkommando C [Airfield Detachment C]
1307 d (L): Flugplatzkommando D (See) [Airfield Detachment D (Sea)]

The typical medium and large Fliegerhorstkommandantur in 1943 and thereafter had all or most of the following components:

Organic to the Air Base
- Fliegerhorstkp. (Air Base Co.)
- Gruppe Verwaltung (Administrative Gp. )
- Ln.Stelle (Signals Section)
- Wetterstelle (Weather Section)
- Lw.-Sanitätsstaffel (Medical Section), and/or Lw.-Krankenrevier (Dispensary)
- Lw. Zahnstation (Dental Clinic)
- Flugleitung (Air Traffic Control)
- Bildstelle (Photographic Section)
- Munitionsverwaltung (Munitions Administration)
- Flieger-Techn.Verwaltung (Air Technical Administration)
- Betriebs-Techn.Gruppe (Technical Operations Gp. )
- Fliegerhorst Werft (Air Base Workshops)
- Feuerschutzeinheit (Fire Fighting Section)
- Bomben-Übungs-u.Schiessplatz (Bomb and Gunnery Range)

Attached to the Air Base (as required)
- Flughafen-Betriebskp.(Qu) (Airfield Servicing Co.(Quartermaster))
- Werft-Abteilung oder -züge (Workshop Detachment or Platoons)
- Lw.Bergekp. (Salvage Co.)
- Landesschützeneinheiten (Guard units)
- Lw.-Baueinheiten (Construction units)
- Transportkolonnen (Transport Columns)
- Flugbetriebsstoffkolonnen (Aviation Fueling Columns)
- Traktorenzüge d.Lw. (Air Force Tractor Platoons)

(Note: these “attached” units were only attached to the Fliegerhorstkommandantur if and when needed, and only in the quantity needed. For example, most air bases had only occasional call for salvage, construction and transport units, and most of the air bases located in Germany used civilian guards rather than uniformed Luftwaffe guard units.)

T-971 roll 34/0554-56 is the roll and frames where you will find the Qu/Luftgaukdo. XIV instructions, 6 Dec 1944.

Larry,

That's excellent, thank you very much.
An answer leading often to new questions, do you know what the letter E, A, (v) and (o) means in German?

CNE503 -

E = Einsatz (Einsatzhafen/Einsatzplatz, i.e., airfield for Operational Employment)
A = Fliegerhorst of the First Order ("A" was used to rank the largest of the Fliegerhorstkommandanturen and does not represent a German word beginning with the letter "A")
(v) - verlegbar
(o) = ortsfest
