Researching Crete operation, i have found that XI. Fliegerkorps had a recon unit and its commander was killed there. Was it common for Fliegerkorps to have an air recon own assets?
What was the typical use and aircraft models, quantity?
Korps-Aufklärungstaffel information and composition?
Re: Korps-Aufklärungstaffel information and composition?
Aufklärungsstaffel XI. Fliegerkorps
(Unit Code: 4Q+)
It existed from 1 January 1941 to 1 December 1942. Equipped almost entirely with Bf 110s, but had a couple of Fi 156s and then some Fw 189s during the second half of 1942.
9 May 41: Bf 110 crashed at Fp.Salonika-Sedes/Greece on return from a recce sortie over Crete, 100%, 2 killed. Staffel deployed to Greece to support XI. Fliegerkorps for the airborne assault on Crete that commenced 20 May. One of the two killed was Staka Hptm. (later Maj.) Hans Lampertsdörfer.
It was the only Aufklärungsstaffel that officially bore the name of a Fliegerkorps.
