Hi,

which type flew Walter Oesau on his last air victory on 8.5.44. He attacked an american Bomber formation southeast of Verden and shot down a P47 flewn by Lt William Rautenbush.

What version of Fw 190A he used, and maybe which markings?

Bye

He was KIA on 11 May 1944 in his Bf 109 G-6, WNr. 20601,"green 13". I have a photo of him in a Fw 190 A-6 also "green 13" a few months earlier

Hello ;

Why do you think the last 1944 Walter Oesau victory was in a Fw 190 ?

Walter Oesau, Fw 190 A-5 in JG 2, France during 1943.

Hi,

his unit was equipped with the Fw 190 A, and he made his last victory in a Fw 190 regarding the US reports.

for April 1944:
Stabsschwarm Fw 190 A Lippspringe airfield
I./1 Fw 190 A Lippspringe airfield
II./1 Fw 190 A and some Bf 109 G until reeqipment to Fw 190 A Lippspringe airfield
III./1 Bf 109 G Volkel airfield
Sturmstaffel JG1 Fw 190 A-7 Salzwedel airfield

maybe anyone has corrections?

To add: Did the Stabsschwarm had some Bf 109 G left? I don´t know why he was shot down in a Bf 109 G-6.

I don´t know why he was shot down in a Bf 109 G-6.

This picture of gun camera shows the hit on Walter Oesau's aircrat ( Stab JG 1/ Bf 109 G-6/AS " Green 13 ", Wing Number 20601 )
Many times, the Geschwader Stab operated with different aircrafts than Gruppen.
A curiosity, his plane does not carry Geschwaderkommodore markings

Thank you, I didn´t know that pic. That would be an explaination for the Bf 109, that the Stab used still some Bf 109.

Now it would be interesting to know if the flew a Bf109 or a Fw 190 on his last air victory. Even if the USAAF claims a Fw 190 it could be a mistake. In my sources the Stab was already reequipped with Fw 190 in April 1944. But the loss of Oesau is a proof that I am wrong.

Add again: Which type did shot him down? Thunderbolt, Mustang, Lightning?

Oesau flew a Bf 109 because he did not like the Fw 190s. Stubborn man, did not like to change his aircraft. Flew the E series until there were no more parts left before he was forced essentially to switch to the Fs, then had to be ORDERED to fly a Fw 190. Would think that as he advanced in popularity and kill rate, he'd be able to pick what he wanted, and it shows that he did in 1944. Went back to the G series and that's where we find him on May 11th, '44.
