Martin -- According to Generalleutnant Herman Plocher's "German Air Force versus Russia, 1942" (USAF Historical Studies No. 154), pp. 218-220, the German 4th Army captured Rostov-on-Don 23 Jul 1942, supported by the bombing and ground attack units of the IV and VIII Air Corps. From the situation maps in this book, it doesn't look like the Germans had captured any operational airfields in the Caucasus at that time. The text doesn't mention Jegorlyksja.

David,

Many thanks for your assist. Are you able to see what airfield that was most close to Rostov and held by Germans during this time ?

Best & tanks again

Martin -- The map set to Plocher's study shows no airfields at all. I started to look through my other books in this, my first effort at Luftwaffe research -- what a swamp!

Here's what I found so far:
VIII Fliegerkorps based at:
23.6.42 - 9.7.42 Kursk
9.7.42 - 7.42 Nikolskoje
7.42 Tazinskaja
end.7.42 - end.11.42 Oblivskaja

IV Fliegerkorps based at:
7.42 Stalino
8.42in Maikop

I haven't found a list of the subordinate units to either Fliegerkorps. This may take some time, and there may not be any results, either. I'll keep looking, and offer my apologies in advance.

Hi Martin

Not sure if this is what your after but I'm slowly flicking through Tieke's work "Caucasus and the Oil", which deals with the battles in the Caucasus between 42'43 and mainly deals with the ground war, but dotted around are brief sentances about Luftwaffe support etc.

As and when I come across some I'll post it if it is of interest?

Hi Andy,

I'm aware that it mostly were ground forces around. Anyway, the Luftwaffe flew missions as support as you wrote. It's those support routes that I'm interested of. Specially around the date August 1, 1942 and the area around Jegorlykskaja (South of Rostov). I know that planes flew that very day but don't know what unit they belonged to or what target they were supposed to attack. The SS-Division Wiking were there that very day and advanced south.

Best
Martin
