Does anyone recognises this unit marking?
It looks a bit like the one of the Kampfgeschwader 500 but i'm not sure it's the same one.

hi 323F,

You are right the emblem is KGzbV 500. Aircraft code starts with J6+?? , the plane on the photo has code 1Z which means this plane is from KGvbV 1.

greetz,

Thank you / hartelijk bedankt, himmelhund.

Could you explane me what the KGvbV 1 and KGzbV just means? I'm not so expertised in the Luftwaffe-items.

hallo 323F,

KGzbV means: Kampf Geschwader zur besonderen Verwendung , plat in 't nederlands 'gevechts eskader voor speciaal gebruik'.

Sorry for all english readers this is something between two Flemish speaking persons.

Hi, guys...

Thought you might want to see these unit badges. KGzbV 500's badge is the one with the yellow background, which is the coat of arms of the city of Dortmund, and in addition to the above-mentioned unit, was also used by 7.Staffel/KG4 on their He111s in Norway in April 1940.

The other badge is a Brandenburg eagle, and was the insignia of II.Gruppe/KGzbV1 early in the war. I believe this is the insignia that is shown on the aircraft in the photo. They are, admittedly, quite similar in detail, especially on an old monochrome picture.

Regards

Hello
Added part of a photo with a LW unit insignia. It seems to be the one from KGzbV 500.

Hi, Stril...

Your photo is very intersting, not least because I can't identify the insignia on it. I have to say, though, that I don't think it's KGzbV500's marking. The enlarged shot of the insignia on the Ju52 clearly shows the eagle's head turned right, with the crown and breastplate showing, which makes me think it's KGzbV1's Brandenburg eagle. The 'Dortmund' eagle of KGzbV500 faces left. On the photo you provide, I believe the eagle is different again. I can't make out which way the head is facing. The inside curve of the wings up to the head, the legs at a wider angle than those of the 'Dortmund' eagle and the highly-stylised tail feathers would seem to discount this being KGzbV 500, unless it is a variation of the insignia.

I have no idea really what it is. There is a Ju 34 beside the car with the markings ?8+KX. Most of the pictures from this album are taken in Norway in april 1940. What LW unit it might be i have no idea.

Kampfgeschwader or Kampfgruppe z.b.V. 500? [Was there a Kampfgeschwader 500?]
