Did the Luftwaffe have any success with the Fw 190 A-5/U14 torpedo-carrier? Just curious/Fred.

Fw 190 Question

#2

Post by Robert Hurst » 16 Jan 2003, 13:34

Hi Fred

Only two prototypes of the Fw 190A-5/U14 (Werk-Nummern 871 and 872) were ever completed.

They were characterised by having an enlarged fin and lengthened tailwheel leg. Gun armament was restricted to wing root-mounted MG 151s. They carried the LTF 5b torpedo on an adapted ETC 501 fuselage rack.

The only other torpedo-fighter version was the Fw 190A-5/U15. This was similar to the above apart from being intended to carry the Blohm und Voss LT 950 guided torpedo. Only a single prototype being completed.

The caption to photo: Fw 190A-5/U14 torpedo fighter with LTF 5b torpedo on adapted ETC 501 fuselage rack. The enlarged fin and lengthened tailwheel leg are noteworthy.

The attached photo was taken from 'The Warplanes of the Third Reich', by Wiliam Green.

Fw 190 Question?

Hi

Just some additional info for you Fred.

The gross weight of the aircraft. with torpedo, but without external tanks, was 10,251 lb, and with two 66-Imp gal tanks under the wings, 11,464 lb. Maximum speed without torpedo and external tankage was 323 mph, while with torpedo only and no external tankage it was almost 310 mph.

Werke Nummern 871 was transferred for initial tests to Adelheide, near Delmenhorst (NW Germany) on 9 August 1943, and was demonstrated to the Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe at Gotenhafen.

For Varjag

The normal type of torpedo dropped by aircraft was the LTF 5b, which had a length of 17 ft 7 in (16 ft 3 1/2 in without fuze), diameter of 1 ft 5 3/4 in, and weighed 1,686 1/2 lb. Modified several times, it retained its diameter, but the weight was changed repeatedly up to a maximum of 1,763 lb. It was later redesignated LT 1A/1, /2 or /3, the numerical suffix denoting a difference in speed when running in water.

The above text and attached photo was taken from 'The Focke Wulf 190: A Famous German Fighter', by Heinz J. Nowarra.

If the Fw 190 A-5/U14 had gone into production and operation service, how effective would the torpedoes dropped from the aircraft have been against British warships in the North Sea? I wanted to ask because I remember that the poor combat performance of the TBD Devastator at Midway was due to problems with the Mark 13 torpedo.
