Hi,
I am researching a Luftwaffe pilot who shot down a Stirling Bomber (BF519 HA-E of 218 sqn) on the night of 31st July 1943, the pilot in question is Feldwebel Ternieden, of NJG 2. How would i go about finding out if he shot any other aircraft down or what became of him?

Cheers, Rick

Hi Rick,

The following I've found in Theo Boiten's excellent Nachtjagd War Diaries book:
Lt. Helmut Ternieden belonged to 3./NJG2, E./NJG1, Stab II./NJG2 and 6./NJG2.
He managed to shoot down 3 bombers, was killed in the night of 15.-16.3.44 at Neilingen in air combat with 427 Sqn.
Halifax LW559 (which Ternieden shot down just before his Ju 88 was hit by return fire...!)

regards
Hans K

Hello HansK-greetings from Canada. I too am interested in the story of Lt. Helmut Ternieden. I learned that he died, with his bordfunker (Uffz. Finger), in a ground crash after being shot down by a 427 Squadron Halifax on the night of 15-16 March 1944,(Stuttgart).
I am trying to find out if any of his crew got out (parachute) before the crash, and also was it Halifax LW559 which shot him down.
Any other info would be helpful. I have learned that he is buried at Mulheim an Ruhr.
Thank you.
jbenson.

Hi,
it's been a while since this thread started, does anyone know where I can find a photo of Lt Helmut Ternieden?
Cheers,
Rick
