I agree with Carius, it might also be that it would be much easier to paint the markings on the tails/rudders because it could be done while standing comfortably on the ground- in most cases (very important when adding detail). Lastly, in cases where the kill markings are exclusively applied to the rudder-the rudder could be removed and installed on another aircraft- Just a guess.
Great thread! So many ways & styles of applying mission/kill markings. All so neat & tidy as well.

Thank you for the speedy reply, two different aircraft pictured, seems that the #5 was his number? Achieved most (23) of his 44 kills with the Fiat G.50 Freccia, I never would've guessed that!
