Luftwaffe Bombers on the Eastern Front

#1

Post by sylvieK4 » 02 Mar 2003, 21:33

What bomber aircraft were used most often on the Eastern Front? The use of Stuka bombers in the Polish campaign is well known. What other bomber craft were used against targets in the East from 1939-1945? (I am particularly interested in what bombers were used in the East during 1940-42)

Also, what is the eastern-most target the German Luftwaffe struck on the Eastern Front and when?

Thanks.

Hi Sylvie,

May I kindly suggest the book "Black Cross/Red Star" Volume I and II. It deals with the Air War on the Eastern Front. Those book have received high praise among historians.

Within the time frame you mentioned, I'm not aware of any theatre specific aircraft, so I would say that the whole range of German bombers was used on the EF upto the end of 1942.

As far as I know, the Germans used the He 111, Ju 88, Do 17, and He 177 on the Eastern Front.
