johan ellison- i know Rudel sank the Russian battleship "Marat" and a destroyer and off the top of my head around 70 small boats.

Theres a picture in a book I have of the Marat exploding. Its probably in his biography also, but i dont have that yet.

Hey,
Gunther Rall with 275 victories!!!One of the finest leaders on the Eastern Front and could of been the top ace but had some injuries. Also was the second ace to get 250 victories after Walter Nowotny.JG 52 was the best with Rall, Hartmann and Barkhorn.

Mike :

No I haven't met him personally as I missed a symposium he was attending a few years back in southern California. We have chatted via several mails and he has always been kind enough to answer my questions.
Have written several night fighter aces and their crews for a book that I may be publishing in the next three years. As well as 7/8 Sturmjäger aces via our web-site......

Horrido !

i think he is 84. his birthday was just a few days ago on the 10th. with all he has been throuh, youd think it would have aged him quite a bit, but to live to even 80 is great. i dont think i'll live even that long.

Information on Hans Ulrich Rudel

"
During his career, Rudel flew over 2530 (around 400 of his sorties were flown in a Focke-Wulf 190 fighter plane during whichhe was credit with 11 air victories) missions and destroyed around 150 various artillery pieces, 519 tanks, around 1000 various vehicles, 70 landing crafts, 2 Lavochkin La-3 fighters, Il-2 Stormovik and sunk Battleship "Marat", 2 Cruisers and a Destroyer. Rudel was responsible for such huge damages to the Red Army that Joseph Stalin himself put a price of 100.000 rubles on his head.He flew more than 600.000km and used more than 5.000.000 liters of fuel. Hans Rudel dropped over 1.000.000kg of bombs, fired over 1.000.000 of machine gun rounds, over 150.000 20mm rounds and over 5000 37mm rounds. Rudel thought that the Lend-Lease American tanks were easier to kill than the Soviet T-34s, but he hated their machine guns, because once he was shotdown by one."

Marseille on the Eastern Front

#26

Post by Victor » 16 Mar 2002, 00:35

Who knows what Hans-Joachim Marseille would have accomplished on the Eastern Front? From what I recall readig, Hartmann himself thought Marseille was the best of them all, because he fought against the RAF and not the VVS (however, the VVS was quite a formidable opponent from 1943 onwards and don't really think that Hartmann's disconsideration for the Soviets was motivated).
My guess is that Marseille would have surely reached the 300 limit.

Not sure why but i was always impressed with this guys attitude, i think he should have been left to being a pilot instead of being put in a command position, he seemed a real larger than life character.

Hans-Joachim Marseille

Interesting that Hans-Joachim Marseille was lionized by the German movie industry after the war, when his life story was portrayed in the 50's movie the "Star of Africa", one of the very few WWII movies made in Germany.

Star of Afrika.....

#30

Post by Erich » 16 Mar 2002, 22:06

Correct, and being a pratical joker in his staffel, he wasn't called the Star of Afrika for nothing. A fantastic pilot and marksman no doubt ! His fame was even heard of on the Ost front.

I wonder though what would of happened if he had remained alive and then had to tackle the US 4 engined heavies and their fighter escorts during the months of mid 44 onward ? A score of 300, I seriously doubt. If he had been transferred to the Ost front, then who knows for sure.......we can only speculate.
