SM 82 with the Luftwaffe prior to Italian Armistice?

Post by Spirow Ewes » 19 May 2014 14:14

I found this photo, captioned "SM 82 of the Stab/KG z.b.V. 1 in North Africa", and was intrigued. I never heard that the Luftwaffe used Savoia-Marchetti aircraft prior to the Italian Armistice of Sept 43.

Is that correct? Anyone has more info on this?

Hi I'm back with more info. This is from the Ali D'Italia 14 the Siai SM 82 the Germans were impressed with the aircraft and ordered some. The first was delivered in September 1941. They equipped the III/ KgzbV 1 which mostly operated in Southern Europe North Africa area. Post September 1943 the Germans took over more of them and operated them on all fronts until the end of the war. I hope this of use.

Some additional information from German Aircraft Industry and Production, 1933-1945: in September 1942 a total of 100 SM 82 transport planes were scheduled for delivery to the the Luftwaffe for the December 1942-November 1943 production period.

The first of these purpose-built machines were taken-over in April 1943 with 4 machines, further 4+3 followed in July + August 43

A total of 299 SM.82s were delivered to the Luftwaffe prior to Italy's surrender on September 8, 1943. A few more SM.82s were captured by the Germans after the armistice. Despite the Ju 52's metal skins being more sturdy, the SM.82 was seen by the Luftwaffe as having better capabilities as a transport than the Ju 52.

Some of the aircraft were flown by Italians into German hands.
