Air units in aerial mining of Suez 1941
Air units in aerial mining of Suez 1941
Based on Rhodes.
Candidates i only have KG 26 II or parts of it and KG4 I or parts.
Also about the aircraft employed some say He-111P but that seems a too old version.

Thank you for the link
Those are the Magnetic minesweepers, similar to the JU 52’s right ?
The ones with the gigantic rings
Edit, yes... It would seam, I recalled reading about them before but did not know they were sent to the Med
Its interesting that despite there apparent presence it took them so long to clear the area

Re: Air units in aerial mining of Suez 1941
Yes. I have 3 DWI arriving in February
Both side had them in Med, Ju 52 fro Germans, Italians had one S.81 prototype in 1943, but used modified merchants and motorfishers. Magnetic mines were an important aspect of naval war because initially no one had a counter measure available.

Re: Air units in aerial mining of Suez 1941
One thing I am totally unclear on is if the Italians laid magnetic mines with aircraft, either there own, or German minesDili wrote: ↑08 Oct 2019, 21:21Yes. I have 3 DWI arriving in February

I don't know of any aerial mining by Regia Aeronautica. They only had a 500kg bomb with a timer to be dropped in ports.
