Bullet proof glass- surprising revelations

The HE 111 B stand canopy thickness is given as 60mm, of presumably blown glass, not plexi acrylic. The canopy is stated to be bulletproof in practice, at least versus .303 fire.

Who can shed further light? The canopy never seemed quite so thick to me, and if this is for all intents and purposes armoured glass, it turns the rules on their head; such as armoured glass can only be produced in flat plates. Any visual distortion isn't apparent either. Why not protect the vulnerable front cockpit with a few panes of such glass, redusing the greenhouse framing for visibility and making weight savings elsewhere?
