Ju 86P & R high altitude cameras?

Postby Dili » 02 Dec 2017 20:13

What cameras models these dedicated recon aircraft could take?

This book covers the subject pretty well as it focuses (no pun intended) almost exclusively on the aircraft and photographic equipment:

Wadman, David, John Bradley and Barry Ketley. Aufklärer: Luftwaffe Reconnaissance Aircraft & Units 1935-1945. Aldershot (Hants): Hikoki Publications, 1997. ISBN: 0 9519899 8 7. Hb (oversize). Dj. 272p. Pictorial with accompanying text. Dwgs. (incl. color profiles). Map(s). Tables. Charts. Glossary. Bibliography.

my understanding there were huge surplus of unfinished Ju 86 airframes, my view they should not have abandoned high altitude developments ... technically they may just have switched over to other aircraft but there were few tangible results?

at one point mooted idea to add 3rd engine in the fuselage to power some type of supercharger (WWI-era idea tried elsewhere in WWII) but not enough room, or did not leave enough room for the cameras.

These models were used: Reihenbildner RB 20/30, RB 50/30, RB 75/30.
20, 50, 75 was focal length in cm of Zeiss lenses.

Also sometimes Handkammer HK12.5/7x9 was used, but most likely not on the highest altitudes.

Greg -

Thanks for coming to the rescue! You saved me an hour or two of searching through a not very exciting book.

As it turns out, the book has an entire chapter on the cameras with lots of photos, diagrams and description, and 1 page on the Ju 86. The authors never do state with camera or cameras were used specifically with the Ju 86.
