Lw Nickname/Code Name for B-24
Lw Nickname/Code Name for B-24
I vaguely recall reading in a book 45+ years ago that the Luftwaffe had either informal nicknames or radio call code names for the B-24 and B-17 to differentiate what types they were attacking. If my memory is correct, does anybody know what they were?
Re: Lw Nickname/Code Name for B-24
They usually called them "Viermots". B-17's were occasionally referred to as "Fortresses" or "fliegende Fortress", "Fortress II's". B-24's may have been informally referred to as "box-cars", but I don't recall seeing the German word for this being used, this being "Güterwagen". This is all from memory going back 60+ years so you will need some corroboration.

B-17 and B-24 were usually nicknamed "Dickes Auto" (big car) or "Viermot" abreviation of "Viermotorige" (Four engined aircraft).
I didn't know if Luftwaffe pilots make a difference between a B-17 bomber or a B-24 bomber

I appreciate the feedback. Sure wish I could recall where I read that--if only to see if my memory is correct!
