Luftwaffe aviation fuel consumption and flying sorties?

Post by tramonte » 02 Jun 2018 21:57

I guess there are some statistics available about German aviation fuel production (mostly 150 000 - 200 000 tons monthly in 1943 and to early 1944). There are also some estimates of German Luftwaffe combat sorties like in 1944:

West: 182,004
East: 342,483

http://don-caldwell.we.bs/jg26/thtrlosses.htm

And after USAAF/RAF slaughtering Luftwaffe in early months of 1944 really started there was some data suggesting that Luftwaffe aviation schools would have needed 60 000 - 80 000 tons aviation fuel in a month to train new pilots (no idea how many flying hours). But are there accurate numbers how much did Luftwaffe used annually (or monthly) for

1) training pilots
2) for non-combat flying (transport, shifting aircraft from airbases...)
3) combat flying ( Caldwell's figures are suggesting that LW might have had combat sorties in east 1943 perhaps some 360 000)

It doesn't help much to know that Bf-109 G might have hogged some 500 liters fuel in one (and 1 hour) combat sortie.

Imports :129000 tons
Consumption :1,825 million tons
Stocks at the end of the year: 440000 tons

This may also be of intrest
Thanks Hanny. Interesting document. I hope to get more information of Luftwaffe aviation fuel consumption figures from 1942 to mid 1944 and share between units, training and aviation industry.

It seems to be approximately realistic to estimate that when it's question of combat aircraft single engine fighters and single engine fighter-bombers consumed with their average 1.25 hour combat sorties about 300 liters and twin engine bombers with 4 hours sorties some 2,000 liters aviation fuel. With 450 000 sorties, 50%-50% share (Eastern Front in 1943) this would mean something like 510,000 - 520,000 tons or average 42,000- 45,000 tons per month. My wild guess. But real figures still unknown.
