night fighters

60 th Group of 41 Stormo at Lonate Pozzolo airport( Varese-Lombardia) had 3 Be-110 that were used exclusively for training, seven Dornier 217 J-1 without radar and eight Do-217 J-2 with radar Lichtenstein Fu .G.202.
The night fighters were directed to the target by DICAT that used German radars Freya and Wurzburg.
Some Stirling and Lancaster bombers were destroyed by the italian pilots usually by direct optical targeting without the aid of their radar on board .

Courage Alone by C Dunning ISBN 1 902109 02 3

This details the units of the Italian Air Force 1940 to 1943 including history bases and equipment type
eg 3 Gruppo CT is noted as in May 1943 being at Caltagrione , Sicily equipped with Bf 109G-6.

The supporting text adds details of operations and numbers in many cases.

This information can be supplemented by the works of C Shore and his various collaborators

published by Grub Street

Malta :The Hurricane Years
Malta : The Spitfire Years
Air War for Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete

and published by Squadron/Signal
Regia Aeronautica Vol 1 & 2

All these works contain references to units equipped with German Aircraft. They include a number of pics and in the case of Dunning's book and the squadron/signal books colour drawings.
