Victory claims against mythical aircraft?

#1

Post by Sid Guttridge » 25 Jul 2020, 09:23

I once read that several British pilots made claims for shooting down He100s. While the type existed, there is no record of its use in combat. Is it true that such claims were made? If so, were any accepted?

Are there similar victory claims for mythical or nob-existent types by pilots of other nations?

Cheers,

Sid.

There are various RAF claims from the battle of France and the Battle of Britain for He 100 and He 112 aircraft in the daily "Combats and Casualties", starting around AIR 16/958 IIRC.

More interesting is that both sides liked to make claims for enemy "Hawk 75". :D

The fictional plane that Captain America shoots down resembles a scaled-up Horten Ho 229 because it has two turbojets buried in the wing roots. It most closely resembles the Horten Ho XVIII flying wing bomber project. See this link for additional info:

There were also claims for shot-down he-113s, even though the aircraft only existed in German propaganda.

Maybe not actually victory claims, but e.g. Ju 86s were being reported by Polish pilots in September 1939, while none were used over Poland. Similarly, there were numerous cases of observing Me 163s over Germany in 1944/45 in areas where they could not be present.
