'U' stamp on Luftwaffe property: Meaning?
'U' stamp on Luftwaffe property: Meaning?
Does anyone know what a 'U' stamp would signify on arms that were repaired/refurbished through a Luftwaffe repair depot?
Thank you,
Pat

Almost certainly "Überprüft" = "inspected".

Larry,
Thank you for the very quick reply. Do you know if this extended to small arms in Luftwaffe inventory?
Thanks,
Pat

Not with certainty, but it probably does.
Some years ago, I recall seeing a little handbook being offered that illustrated and defined all of the stamps and markings to be found on German weapons manufactured before and during the war. You might want to look for German weapon websites and look for mention of handbooks covering these markings, and/or ask your question there if the website has a forum. Good luck!

Re: 'U' stamp on Luftwaffe property: Meaning?
Thanks again, Larry. Was that book Michael Heidler's 'Deutsche Fertigungskennzeichen bis 1945?' I couldn't find it in there, but that mainly deals with manufacturer's codes, et al.
'Inspected' or 'Checked' makes perfect sense as the rifle I saw it on was a captured foreign arm, and would have been an obvious candidate for an armorer to verify fitness for duty and distribution. I posed the question in a firearm forum I am a member of, so hopefully they might be able to offer additional insight (or other examples).
Best,
Pat

Yes, posing the question on a firearms forum is an excellent idea.
Another strong contender would be: "Unbrauchbar" = Unserviceable. I feel 90% confident it's either this one of the first one, "Überprüft".
