Walter Nowotny shall be removed from his grave...

Post by Christoph Awender » 06 Jul 2003 05:14

Since the last few weeks a big discussion is on in Austria and especially in Vienna that the grave of Luftwaffe ace Walter Nowotny has to be removed from the Zentralfriedhof.

I always wondered why he got such a large grave on the central cemetary but now i also wonder why they want to remove it now after nearly 60 years.

Sad news from you.. In Austria like in Italy some people think to be a good anti-fascist by offencing the memory of Those Who Served on the wrong side of History. A shame! :x There are some errors in the biography: large amount of his own victories was obtained against Western Allieds. When his own Me 262 was shot down he died after a couple of days by cause of terrible burnsts. Allied Mustangs and Typhoons claimed his killing, but the truth is that His death is still mantled of misteries and legends like the death of any great German Ace had to be: legendary.

Where do they want to put the grave if it is removed from its current place?

Why do they want to move it at all?

Hi,
the want to move the grave, because Novotny was Member of the NSDAP and HJ-Führer.
In my opinion thats riddicolous.
Good night Vienna

Sylvie, as I understand it Nowotny has had a honorary grave until now.

Best regards/ Daniel

Calm down,

I just spoke with a good friend of mine who is a well informed press guy.

Here is the latest information:

1. He won´t be removed from his grave and he won´t be removed from the graveyards.
2. The location of his grave is that of an honour grave which are under care by the City of Vienna.
3. But the City of Vienna will only stop caring for his grave. So the grave has de jure lost its honour status, de facto not.
4. There won´t be an additional sign telling that this is the grave of somebody bad.

So the desecration of his grave is out of discussion and not longer under dispute.

Some remarkable data:

Walter "Nowi" Nowotny, Maj.
258 confirmed kills (Nr. 5, behind Hartmann, Barkhorn, Rall and Kittel)
DoB: 07.12.1920, Gmünd, Austria
Rottenkamerad: Karl "Quax" Schnörrer (46 confirmed kills)
Ritterkreuz: 04.09.1942, Lt., 9. Staffel/JG 54 >Grünherz<
Eichenlaub zum Ritterkreuz: 05.09.1943, Olt., Kpt. 1. Staffel/JG 54 >Grünherz<
Schwerter zum Ritterkreuz: 22.09.1943, Hptm., Kdr. I. Gruppe/JG 54 >Grünherz<
Brillanten zum Ritterkreuz: 19.10.1943 (Nr. 8 of 27), Hptm. Kdr. I. Gruppe/JG 54 >Grünherz<
DoD: 08.11.1944, Achmer-Bramsche, Germany, Maj., Kdr. EGr. Nowotny (Jet Fighter - Me 262 - Testing Command)

DE IURE ET DE FACTO CONSISTIT INIURIA.
Political byzantinisms. Honour turned back after 60 years means killing history, exactly as just done in Italy for Italo Balbo. But they could not kill the "green heart" another time.
