I was skimming a book on the Faroe Islands when I noticed mention of a German aircraft that came down in the islands on 29 November, 1939, through lack of fuel.
i presume it ditched at sea, as no mention is made of a wreck. It had a four-man crew.
Does anyone know the aircraft type and unit it came from?
Many thanks,
Sid.

Apparently a seaplane (possibly a donier do16 according to link). It landed about a seamile from the coast. Due to rough sea and being pursued by a british trawler they managed to reach the coast but hit a rock. One managed to swim in to the beach. A Faroese party of men managed to save the rest. Plane could not be saved.
This is the link if you want the whole story (it’s in danish).

Hi Waleed, danebrog and Wekusta,
Thanks very much indeed. Your replies have brought in far more information than I was expecting. I shall start putting it through Google Translate.
It is your sort of expertise and hard fact contribution that makes membership of AHF so worthwhile. The luftwaffe-zur-see.de site was a new one to me and seems to contain a mass of information.
Six years ago I put up another Faroes-related question on search.php?keywords=Ratray
It involves a He 115 seaplane that was claimed shot down by a Faroese trawler off Ratray Head in Scotland on 12 June 1941. On that thread there was no confirmation of this claim. Do any of you have any further information of this incident?
Thanks again,
Sid.
