FW-190 Landing Periscope?!

Post by ShindenKai » 08 Apr 2022 08:35

Came across a documentary on YT called “World War 2, the Fighter Aces” and it opens with the FW-190 shown in these stills landing with what appears to be some sort of periscope, for landing?!

I would assume some kind of "aiming device" (G: "Zieleinrichtung/Beobachtungsgerät") for shipboard weapons, most certainly not a landing aid at all..?

The German pilots at that time were intelligent people, not idiots, each new "weapon" "option" was possible...

When I say landing, I mean TAXIING, for the very bad forward visibility once the tail wheel is down on the ground (common issue with ALL tail-dragging, single-engine aircraft). It was just an idea, cuz I haven't found anything about what it could be.

For shipboard weapons? So, its using that to aim the weapons of a ship, on the sea?? Would they need any other radio comms gear for that? If so, where are the antennas for it? Seems highly unlikely.

Maybe an aiming device with some optical magnification? But again, I don't see any unusually large caliber, slow firing cannons mounted..

Nothing stupid about a device that would allow the pilot to see forward better once the tail wheel is down.
BUT obviously it would obscure view (and also a drag penalty) during all other aspects of flight and especially during combat, negating its very minimal benefit. IF, that's what it was for. IDK.

If It was intended for landing/taxiing, they beat the Russians to the idea..
