WWII Soviet Battleship Sunk?

whilst reading about the Russian ship Moskva I noted a bit of trivia; somebody said the Moskva was the first capital Russian / USSR ship sunk since Luftwaffe dive bombers sank a Soviet battleship (in port) in WWII.

anyone know what ship? and the circumstances of its loss?

Battleship Marat. Italian design. Dive bombed by Hans Rudel in his JU-87. He gives an account in his memoirs, Stuka Pilot.

Well that ignores the loss of the Soviet battleship Novorossiysk in Oct 1955 at Sevastopol. She was the ex Italian battleship Guilo Cesare built 1910-14 and reconstructed in the 1930s. Handed over to the USSR in 1948 as war reparations. The most likely explanation for her loss was a mine left over from WW2. Following the explosion, they could not control the flooding and she capsized with the loss of 608 men.

I don't think the Soviet Navy seems to have done much in WWII. river action maybe?

1. Marat was not in dock
2. IMHO only Rudel and Steen attacked Marat.

As Steen perished after another attack on same day, one can say that Rudel is getting credit for what he has not done. But there is also possibility that report written by Steen was going to look like this: "I missed, yes it was Rudel who got the ship" if only Steen had lived long enough.
