Composition of a Luftwaffe Flak-Regiment

Post by martinksk88 » 22 Aug 2022 16:13

Hello fellow schoolers!

I find myself (as a hobby) reading and trying to put together the structure of the Luftwaffe ground forces, more specifically in the first years of the Second World War. My question is, how is the composition of a Flak-Regiment followed by a Flak-Abteilung of the Luftwaffe? is it composed by companies? batteries? platoons? I would also like to know the number of guns and troops of these units. That is to say, I am looking for to deepen in these units to see which is its more basic organization.

Maybe it is too much to ask, but I can't find much info on the internet. I only was able to find in "Lexikon", that a Flak-Regiment was composed by three Abteilungs (I. Abteilung (gem. mot.); II. Abteilung (gem. mot.) and III. Abteilung (Sw. mot.)), but i can't find how those Abteilung are conformed.

Thank you very much and best regards!

That's the page you need to start with:
https://www.ww2.dk/ground/flak.html

Generally the Flak Regiment didn't have a fixed composition, but consisted of several battalions, each battalion of three or more batteries, the number of guns and personnel depended on the type of battery.

Martinksk88:

Total Vehicles: 280 Kfz., 32 motorcycles.
**NOTE: According to Koch, the 280 Kfz. included half-track prime movers but he doesn’t say how many. However, he does say that these were all ZgKw 8t Krauss-Maffei and ZgKw 12t Daimler-Benz. The mittl. and lei. Flak had no Zugmaschinen.

schw. Flakabteilung (v)
Stab mit Nachr.-Zug: 6 Offz., 2 Beamte, 20 Uffz., 67 Mannsch., mit 1 le. MG, ?? Handfeuerwaffen, 19 Kfz., 7 Anh., 4 Krädern.
1. – 4. Battr. je: 2 Offz., 21 Uffz., 81 Mannsch., mit 2 le. MG, ?? Handfeuerwaffen, 2 2cm-Flak, 6 8,8cm Flak, 2 Kfz., 9 Anh., 2 Krädern.
Total Personnel: 14 officers, 2 officials, 83 NCOs, 263 men = 362.
Total Flak Weapons: 24 x 8,8cm, 8 x 2cm.
Total Vehicles: 27 trucks, 12 motorcycles.
[Source: Koch, Anlage 11, pp.657-58]. [Note: Koch’s math is wrong! The correct total is 14 Offz., 2 Beamte, 104 NCOs, 391 men = 511.]
