Flak-Schießplatz Deep/Pommern (new: Mrzezyno, Poland)

Post by niemandsland » 30 Oct 2023 16:27

Hi, I'm currently in the process of evaluating the 1940-1942 war diary from Stab/Flakregiment 25 (Flakgruppe Harz -> Flakgruppe Hannover).

Although I have only evaluated a few pages, I noticed that practically all of the heavy anti-aircraft batteries in 1941 were sent from Lower Saxony (Flakgruppe Hannover & Harz) via the Hanover main freight station to Deep, completed shooting training there and were then transported back.

I would be interested to know when the DEEP anti-aircraft firing range was used by the Luftwaffe.

I am also interested in further information about the DEEP shooting range.

How big was the aa-firing range? Place for how many troops?

I think it is the area west of the town of Mrzezyno, Poland (Deep)?!?

Does anyone have further information about this?

I am very grateful for any information.

Greetings from Hanover/Germany,
Guido Janthor

A little bit:

Deep (land and sea) (GER) (54 08 20 N – 15 17 00 E)
General: airfield and seaplane station in Pomerania 22 km WSW of
Kolberg (Kolobrzeg) near the present-day village of Mrówcze Gory on
the Baltic coast, and 4 km W of Kamp airfield. History: existed at
least since 1938. Airfield used mainly by target-towing aircraft in
support of the Flakschiessplatz (Antiaircraft gunnery range) located
there. Surface and Dimensions: grass surface. Infrastructure:
none noted.
Station Units (on various dates – not complete): Feld-Flakartillerieschule 15 (Mitte) (1943).

You will have to dig deeply into the German, Polish and British archives to find the level of detail you want.

Larry,

Nice summary, thank you. I wonder if the gunnery range shot out over the water.

Cheers

Yes, I think the great majority of firing was into the air along the coast and out to sea, usually at target sleeves towed by obsolete aircraft. When the shells detonated, the metal fragments fell into the water rather than come down on land and injure military personnel, farmers, town's people, etc.

Hi Larry,

Thanks for your answer.

Attached is an edited aerial photo from Google Earth. With a small excerpt from the anti-aircraft firing range from 1943/1944.

At the moment I only know that heavy anti-aircraft detachments from the Luftgau XI area (Lower Saxony) were transported to Deep/Pomerania in 1941.

On average it took 18-20 days with arrival and departure. I now assume that it took 2-3 days to travel by train from Hanover, Braunschweig, Hamburg, etc. to Deep with the anti-aircraft equipment and crew. This results in a likely stay there at the anti-aircraft firing range of 14 days.

The location of the place roughly: 54.128262, 15.248327 ( 54°07'41.7"N 15°14'54.0"E )

What I know so far...

1945-03-17: The following will be dissolved with immediate effect:
a) Feld-FAS 13 - Stolpmünde
-> Feld-FAS 15 - Deep

b) Kommandantur (command)
Flakartl.Schießplatz B - Stolpmünde
Flakartl.Schießplatz B - Deep

Source: BA-MA, RL 2-III/1294 (p. 23)

The Deep anti-aircraft artillery firing range was operated until March 17, 1945 and then disbanded.

There is a file in the BAMA (RL 12/152) that runs from February to December 1936, where there is already talk of shooting exercises at the Bruesterort, Deep, Wustrow and Döberitz firing ranges. However, I don't know this file yet.

I haven't found any more information yet, but I'm continuing to evaluate files (from Germany, England and the USA) in the hope of discovering more information.

At the moment, the war diary from Stab/Flak-Regiment 25 (Flakgruppe Harz / Flakgruppe Hannover) for the first years of the war has my highest priority. About 180 pages of text to evaluate.

Thanks again for the information regarding Deep.

Kommandeur und andere Offiziere

Go to www.ww2.dk > Luftwaffe Officer Career Summaries in the Menu on the left side of the screen > download it so you can search the contents > search for "Deep" and "Feld-FAS 15". This will give you the names and careers of many of the Luftwaffe officers who were assigned there. You may have to use other search terms, too.

Thank you, Larry!

As my parents are born near Stolpmünde myself ist always interested in what happened there...

Thorrowly I am after nearly 20 years still not able to trace down the route of 4th SS-Pol.Pz.Gren.Div. through this area...parts of the Ers.u.Aus.Brg. 'HG' were much easier..

All the best and keep on Rocking...
