Ju 88 forced landing to sea near Kotka 1942

Post by parahist » 01 Apr 2024 18:44

A German Ju 88 bomber had to make a forced landing near Kotka on August 22, 1942.

A German Ju 88 made a forced landing in the sea between Lehmä and Santakari. Before landing, 2 sets of insignia were fired from the plane and a rubber boat was dropped from it, after which 2 pilots jumped out with parachutes. The two pilots left the plane after it landed in the sea and before it sank. All four pilots survived on a rubber boat, from which they were taken by speedboat to Kotka.

So far, I had not find code of the aircraft and names of the aircrew members. Even this pages do not help: http://hugojunkers.bplaced.net/junkers- ... rials.html

Can anyone help and find details?

You may try the following files, which (hopefully) cover the date that you are interested in.

RL 2-III/762 Bd. 11 - 11.Jul - 31.Aug.42
RL 2-III/763 Bd. 12 - 01.Sep - 14.Okt.42
RL 2-III?764 Bd. 13 - 15.Okt - 15.Dez.42

or

RL 2-III/1182 Bd. 11 - 3.Juli - 2.Sept.42
RL 2-III/1183 Bd. 12 - 3.Sept - 2.Nov.42

These represent two different views of the same loss data.

These are to be found on Invenio, use the "Suche" function and load the "Singatur" field with the file name e.g. RL 2-III/1182 and hit send. You can then either view the file page by page or download the file to review at your leisure.

Failing that ask your question over on TOCH

Maybe plane from 7./KG 1 ?
Ju 88 A4 Werknr. 3716, emergency landung location is given as Pl.Qu.61634, reason: "Notlandung infolge Flak- u. Jägerbeschuss (Besatzung unverletzt)".

Loss date is given as 21.08.1942.

from RL 2-III/762

Hmmm.........Andrus. III./KG 1 (including 7.St.) was temporarily detached to the Central Sector and operating from Bryansk at this time:

9.8.42: aircraft and crews of III./KG 1 temporarily transferred to Bryansk to support Operation “Wirbelwind” - an offensive to recover ground east of Roslavl around Sukhinichi.
21.8.42: 7.St. Ju 88 A-4 shot down by AA fire and fighters in the Operation “Wirbelwind” target area, 100%, crew safe.
27.8.42: III./KG 1 returned to Dno.

So the Kotka Ju 88 must have been from another Kampfgeschwader or other unit, such as a Fernaufkl.St.

I was suggesting this plane because:
* Pl.Qu. [26 Ost] 61634 is near Kotka (26 Ost is my speculation)
* details about loss seems same: "1 Ju 88 wird über Lavansaari von der russ. Flakabwehr getroffen und muss, von russ. Jägern gejagt, bei Kotka heruntergehen. Die Besatzung wird gerettet, das Flugzeug versinkt."
* 7./KG 1 probably already lost plane nearby on 3.8.42 (WNr. 4064)

But I will try to look at documents for period 9.8. - 27.8.

Lavansaari and Kotka in the Gulf of Finland and 7./KG 1 go together nicely prior to III./KG 1 moving to Bryansk on 9 August. It's possible the 21(22?) August incident was a 7. Staffel Ju 88 that was held back at Dno and did not go to Bryansk. It may have been in the workshops at Dno and not serviceable again until just before 21 August. Staffeln frequently did not make tactical transfers with all of its aircraft. Some were almost always undergoing maintenance and repair and held back until they could be made serviceable.

Seems there was small detachment in Kotly. It was part of KG 1 and it was called in daily Lw Einsatzbefehl "Stukakette Kotly" or just "Kette Kotly". Task given to it was "Überwachung des Finnenbusens wie bisher".

On 20. August 1942 there was discussion between commanders of HG Nord and Lfl 1 and air force commander was referencing some order against soviet submarines:
So maybe this "Kette" was assigned special task and it stayed with Luftflotte 1 during whole August?

Interesting, Andrus! An excellent example of the continuous command disagreements between OKH and Ob.d.L.

Re Kotly: the only bomber unit there in August-September 1942 was II./KG 76.

But, as you pointed out, it was an Abspringhafen, so all sorts of aircraft flew in and flew out all of the time for fuel and munitions.

One Ju 88 a-4"crashed down in Liperi Rauvanlahti Ju-254 early July 1944. Ca 2010 they made necklages of the pkane metal to help war veterans. I got five. I think the whole crew died.

Thanks Andrus and others!

Is there any other info about Ju 88 A4 Werknr. 3716? Like names of the air crew?

That JU-254 story are not part of this discussion. All air crew died in that accident.
