Ta-154 Moskito

#1

Post by Flakwalker » 03 May 2004, 05:20

First of all hello to all :)

I have the following questions about the Ta-154 Moskito, so any info will be welcome:

Note: I have the Schiffer and Myhra book, aswell references on the Monogram book Close up.

1) There is a version that whas photografied when it was crash landed, this version had Jumo 213 engines, a different antenae array and two 20mm cannons and the 30mm removed, it have a cockpit for 2 pilots since a photo show that.

However the problem is the correct name for it. The Schiffer book call it A-2/U-4 a night and bad weather fighter, the Myhra book call it A-4.
For both Schiffer and Myhra book, the A-2 is a single seat night fighter however the first one add the A-2/U-4 from where the photos at the end of the book are referenced (the ones I tell you before). The Monogram close up show the A-4 but using the Jumo 211 engines.
All books agree that the A-4 have the wing tips up to improve handling, however in the crashed version I don`t notice it.

So my questions are: what is the correct name for that version?, there are blueprints or technical drawings featuring this version?

2) The addition of the Jumo 213 engines needed an enlongued fuselage, some sources say that the enlongation was smooth, other than the enlongation wasn`t smooth like the fuselage enlongation of the FW-190D or Ta-152.
So what was the metod used?

3) On the books, there apear an image of the Ta-154 mockup cockpit, however this could be the one for the Ta-154B, C, or Ta-254 so I wonder if this ones where builded or if there was blueprints about.

Here is an interesting link showing a conversion done to a plastic model kit about the crashed late version: http://www.msc-hansgrade-berlin.de/baub ... 4aduda.htm
However the conversion set call this version A-1 :?

PS: I post this message here because I don´t found an aircraft forum, if this thread belong to other forum feel free to move it.

Maybe you should post the photos in question, instead of describing it.
Or
post your question in one of these specialised forums:

AWF Air Warfare Forum

Although this thread is nearly 19 years old, it should be noted that the Luftwaffe Profile Series volume about the Focke-wulf Ta 154 by Manfred Griehl published by Schiffer in 1999 mentions both the Ta 154A-2/U4 and Ta 154A-4, and in particular features a drawing of the Ta 154A-4 from the Focke-Wulf project documentson page 32. Since the Ta 154A-4 was to be fitted with the FuG 220 radar for night interception, and the Ta 154A-2 that was photographed when it made a crash-landing had no radar installed, the identification of the aircraft with operational code D5+HD as a Ta 154A-2/U4 in the book by Griehl is definitely correct, given that no examples of the Ta 154A-4 appear to have been completed before Ta 154 production was stopped in August 1944. Also bear in mind that the Ta 154A-2/U4 and Ta 154A-4 were two-seat aircraft, whereas Ta 154A-1 and Ta 154A-2 were single seaters.

Does anyone find the Ta-154 insanely good looking for a WW2 aircraft?

Something about the top-mounted wing, underslung engine 'eggs', and that angular armored cockpit just makes for a mean looking fucking plane.

^This. Has VERY poor side visibility (thanks poorly located engines). Would not have been fun to fly. But not terrible looking.
