Operation "Bodenplatte" Question 1

#1

Post by Andy H » 24 Jul 2002, 21:50

Each of the KG Gruppe's that took part in Bodenplatte had a Ju88 night fighter assigned to it to help navigate the main body to it's target.

I can't find a listing of where the Ju88's came from in terms of there unit allocation-Can anyone help.

Andy :

How can I assist you ? Speciifc questions or just units listed ? I cannot reveal too much as two Dutch authors have not released their massive work on the battle yet, but can give you a little bit. what is your interest out of curiousity ? 8)

32 flights in all, 1 flight per fighter gruppe. That is JG not KG by the way :)

Reports of NJG's 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 and also 100 and 101.

one of my sources also reports the following. Ju 88G-1's and Ju 88G-6's providing navigational assisstance to the JG's involved. In fact several of the JG's got lost after the night fighter's flew back to base.

5, 7, 9./NJG 1
1, 4, 9, 10./NJG 3
11./NJG 101

I also have a few losses listing of NJG crews on this date.

Thanks Erich for the info and the correction over the KG.

My interest is a passing one in that I've always read about Op.Bodenplatte in terms of it's tie in with the Ardennes offensive but never read any further, which leads me on to a book I saw in my local library about the op and that it mentioned the Ju88 navigating the main units to the target but didn't list what NJG they were from and just listed the JG only

Andy :

You are quite welcome friend !

if your intersts in this persist, please type in Bodenplatte in your search engine and a site should come up with something like......transferring you to Bodenplatte. Or something similiar. The web-master is one of two that is working on the book I mentioned which will cover this day as well as the Ardenne battles as a whole. The two Dutchmen have been researching this for quite some time and are actively involved in aviation archealogy in Holland and elsewhere. check it out ! 8)

Andy, it will be a most interesting book to read, and worth the price paid in my opinion. I am looking forward to it !

There's a book that contains additional info about the nuts and bolts of Operation Bodenplatte:

Manrho, John & Pütz, Ron, 2004. Bodenplatte: The Luftwaffe's Last Hope-The Attack on Allied Airfields, New Year's Day 1945. Ottringham, United Kingdom. Hikoki Publications. ISBN 1-902109-40-6
