Sturzkampfgeschwader 165
Hi,
What can anyone tell me of Luftwaffe Sturzkampfgeschwader 165? All indications were that it was only a pre-war unit. What was it's primary mission, and what were the airplane types used? Any and all information will be highly welcomed.
regards,
Darren

Hello... In April of 1934 the Luftwaffe used one squadron of Henschel-123's to test "dive bombing". One year later this unit was expanded into a Stuka wing, called Gruppe Schwerin, and on April 1935 it became Immelmann Gruppe. The II/StG165 Immelmann used the Henschel-123A-1Darren J. When production of the Junkers-87 started Goering wanted six Stukagruppen, of which four were to be equipped with the New Ju-87. The four units were: I and II/StG162(which became StG123), I/StG262(later
I/StG2), and III/StG165(later III/StG51). Each group had 39 planes, three squadrons of 12, and three aricraft for the wing commander & staff. This was to give the Luftwaffe a first-line gruppe strength of 156 Ju-87's. Cheers brustcan

Hello to all ; a little complement...........................................
Sturzkampfgeschwader 165 - Short History.
The story of the StG 165 began in Kitzingen on April 1, 1936, with the formation of the 1st Group (I. Gruppe / StG 165). The Group consisted of three staffeln, equipped with Heinkel He 51, Arado Ar 65, and finally Henschel Hs 123. On April 1, 1937, a Geschwader Staff was organized in Kitzingen. At the same time in Schweinfurt was established a II. Group and in Fürstenfeldbruck a III. Group. On May 1, 1939, it was renamed as StG 77. The III. Group became the III. / Sturzkampfgeschwader 51.

Interesting indeed is that the sources claim that the planes used were He 51, Ar 65, Hs 123 and Ju 87B ..... but the photo states that these Ju-87A belonged to the 2./StG 165 (or II. / StG 165 ??) ..............................Cheers. Raúl M .
