Oberstleutnant Eberhard Ebeling

#1

Post by CNE503 » 20 Feb 2018, 00:31

Hello,
Could someone tell me more about this officer?
What is quite sure is that he was commanding the Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 141 (6. Gebirgs-Division) in Spring 1941: he died leading it against the "Metaxas" fortified line on April 6th, 1941. Apparently, he was mortally wounded by an artillery shell.
But what was his assignments before? I have reasons to believe that he was commander of Infanterie-Regiment 195 (78. Infanterie-Division). And does anyone know what were the precise circumstances of his death?
Eberhard Ebeling was born in Celle on April 18th, 1897.
Thank you for your kind help. Regards,

Hello Jan-Hendrik,

Thanks for that. No idea about him serving in the 78. Infanterie-Division at one post or another?
I found references of an Oberstleutnant Ebeling in the divisional KTB.
For instance:
- in NARA T315 R1095 files 526-527, where it is written that Oberstleutnant Ebeling and Major Nagel were leaders for a divisional Stabsoffizierslehrgang on November 21st, 1940, and the former for a Sandkastenplanspiel on November 22nd, 1940;
- or in the files 90-96, where an Oberstleutnant Ebeling was described as a Lehrgangführer between August 30th and September 13th, 1940 in Le Havre, when the 78. Infanterie-Division was training for amphibious operations as Lehrstab "Möve";
- or in the file 556 dated February 2nd, 1941, where an Oberstleutnant Ebeling was stated to be "z.Zt. Kommandeur der Kompanie-Führerschule Mourmelon".

My opinion is that he was either Kommandeur I./Infanterie-Regiment 195, or within the Divisionsstab. But indeed he was never Kommandeur of the whole regiment.
What do you think?

Has really no one anything about this officer?
Well, if he was an Oberstleutnant in 1940, and if he died leading a mountain infantry regiment in Greece the year after, I assumed that there were some records from him. Was I wrong?

Has anyone something about the career of this lieutenant-colonel Ebeling, KIA on April 6th, 1941 as Kommandeur Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 141, previously CO I./Infanterie-Regiment 195?

Hello,

So it appears that I was right about him: he was a member of 78. Infanterie-Division during the first stages of the war (clue: "12. Certificate to 1939 Clasp to 1914 Iron Cross 2nd Class. Issued on 18.7.1940. Signed by Generalleutnant Curt Gallenkamp" / Gallenkamp was the 78. Infanterie-Division commander since November 1939 and until September 1941), and was transferred to 6. Gebirgs-Division at one time or another in the second half of 1940 or early 1941 to take command of Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 141.

It is quite odd because there was no link between the schwabisch 78. Infanterie-Division and any mountain unit.

If anyone has additional information about Eberhard Ebeling, please feel free to add it!
