Generalleutnant Josef Rußwurm (1886-1982)

According to the 1930 Army Rangliste, there are two officers named Rußwurm – both majors and both signals officers. Per Keilig there were two generals named Rußwurm: Josef and Wilhelm, born 19 February 1886 and 28 February 1888 respectively. Both were born in Hochstadt/Aisch and both began their military careers in Infanterie-Regiment Kaiser Wilhelm, König von Preußen (2. Württembergisches) Nr.120. This would lead me to believe they were brothers. Apparently, both men closely paralleled each other in rank throughout their careers.

Here are the entries from the 1930 Army Rangliste: which one is Josef and which one is Wilhelm?

Major: 1 February 1929 (6) – Commander of the 6th (Prussian) Signals Battalion
• Prussian Iron Cross, 1st Class (1914)
• Prussian Iron Cross, 2nd Class (1914)
• Bavarian Military Merit Order, 4th Class with Swords
• Württemberg Friedrich Order, Knight 1st Class with Swords
• Brunswick War Merit Cross, 2nd Class
• Oldenburg Friedrich August Cross, 2nd Class
• Austrian Military Merit Cross, 3rd Class with War Decoration

Major: 1 February 1929 ( 8 ) – On the staff of the Inspectorate of Signal Troops (In 7)/Reich Defense Ministry
• Prussian Iron Cross, 1st Class (1914)
• Prussian Iron Cross, 2nd Class (1914)
• Bavarian Military Merit Order, 4th Class with Swords
• Württemberg Friedrich Order, Knight 1st Class with Swords
• Austrian Military Merit Cross, 3rd Class with War Decoration
• Turkish War Medal (“Iron Crescent”)
• Bulgarian Military Merit Order, 4th Class (Officer’s Cross)

Thanks for any assistance!

Regards,
Shawn

Keilig had them with the same exact promotion dates from Mj all the way to genLt. is that a typo?

Elwyn,

no it is not. They are ranking almost next to each other in the rank lists each. Wilhelm was the more senior one though. For example: They were both Majors 01.02.1929. Wilhelm was (6) and Josef was (8). Only two guys ranking between von Dufais (7) and Hannemann (7a).

As the German promotion system, General staff officers and Technical College officers apart, was a straight line one, these was consequently kept for the further promotions.

Next example is the promotion to Generalmajor: Both were 01.08.1938. Wilhelm was (12) and Josef (13) as both von Dufais and Hannemann were out and no General Staff or Technical College officer was sandwiched in the meantime.

Consequently that brings us to their final reached ranks of Gen. Lt.: Wilhelm 01.09.1940 (3) and Josef 01.09.1940 (4).

Dieter, I have a discrepancy in Josef Russwurm's bio. I believe he relinquished Div. Nr. 158 and Befh. im Elsass on 1-5-42, not 1943, becoming Insp. d. Nachrichtentruppe beim BdE 1-5-42 (Keilig). Also, Ernst Haeckel took over Div. Nr. 158 on 1-5-42 (Keilig, Bradley).

BTW, I have an unknown commander of Div. Nr.158- I cannot find who commanded it between Wolf Boysen's transfer 1-12-39 and Gen. Russwurm's taking command in June 1940. Can anyone help with this?

Best,
Bill in Cleveland

As I mentioned in my original post regarding Mikulicz, the document was issued in his name, not signed later by him. So, it appears to me that he was Vertreter on 03 Jan 1942. Here is a link to the relevant document.

According to "Lexikon der Wehrmacht" and Axis History Factbook, Helge Auleb was acting at 444. Sich.Div. from 03.02.1942 - 04.03.1942 for whatever that's worth. It's possible - Bradley shows him in Führer-Reserve during that time.
Best,
Bill

I am just reading/checking a roll on the 293.ID in 1940. There are PLENTY of documents personally signed by Russwurm (Josef) and they are ALL signed as Russwurm (NOT Rußwurm), so I wonder why the major sources report him as Rußwurm
