Major von der Groeben /Kav.Ers.Abt. 100

I am trying to gather infos about the last Kdr. of my "Stolper home's" unit , their last battle was around Pyritz together wigt the Pz.Div. "Holstein" ( an account about that could be found in Christian Graf von Krockows Memoirs ) .

Largest problem is that I have still no first name and that there are so many von der Groebens in German Army traditionally 8O

So the first trace I have so far is that he was an Oberleutnant in KavRgt. 17 in 1939 ( 1. Schwadron ) .

Now I found a Rittmeister von der Groeben in KradschtzAbt. 4 in 1942 , first as Chef 4. Schwadron , then as Kdr. of this Abt.

Could this be my man ?

Desperatly seeking for help in this case

OK , this Rittmeister of Kradschütz.Abt. 4 we could forget , he fell in the Battle of Stalingrad and was succeeded by Rittmeister von Langenn-Steinkeller....

Hi Jan-Hendrik,

I've got some information which might be helpful. As you know, the name "von der Groeben" is quite a common noble name, so you've got a difficult task. Anyway, the following lists comes from the book "Gedenkbuch des deutschen Adels", 1967 C.A.Starke Verlag, Limburg/Lahn, pages 112-113.

Hopefully these help your search.

Best wishes,
Jason

One more thing...

I just checked "Rangliste des Heeres 1944/45" and it says that "von der Groeben" from Kav.Rgt. 17 was promoted to Major with RDA 01.02.1943 (41).

What a shame 'your' von der Groeben is not there.

Based on my previous use of this Gedenkbuch, it seems to be very comprehensive and accurate concerning the names of the nobility who died during the war, so it would be safe to assume that your Major v.d. Groeben survived the war.

Look on the bright side: at least you have been able to eliminate quite a few von der Groebens from your search! ;-)

Best wishes,
Jason

Yeah , you are absolutly right . So I can be sure that Major von der Groeben reached Danmark together with the rest of his Ers.Abt. !

Don't think this unit had many survivors ...

Mates,

I found this but again no first name for this officer?

Groeben von der Capt Cav Yüzbasi von der Groeben 1917-1918 Yildirim ordularinda g örevli süvari (The groomed cavalryman in the Yildirim army)

Shown as Capt, that could be an Ottoman rank making him a rank lower in the German Army?

A Cavalry Officer are they the same men?

Cheers

S.B
