http://www.ritterkreuztraeger-1939-45.d ... -Heinz.htm

He was awarded with KC in the 1st stage of Operation Barbarossa , being Oberstleutnant and Kdr. of Kradschützenbatallion 22 of 12.PzDiv. According to Cord Schwiers "...und die die Aufklärer sind immer dabei - Zur Geschichte der deutschen Panzeraufklärungstruppe" on 13.8.41 PzAA 2 and K22 were put together to "Panzeraufklärungs- und Vorausabteilung 2" , under the command of OTL Bayer . On 1.12.41 it was renamend back to K 22 , still under Bayer . He remaind Kdr. till March 1942 when he was replaced by Rittmeister Kahler . And there I loose his trace !

Any further info on this man avaiable ?

Hello Jan-Hendrik!
This is maybe a longshot but there is some very sketchy information in a W. Victor Madej book, "German Army Order of Battle: Field Army and Officer Corps 1939-1945" (1985). It simply states the following:
Bayer: Nachr. Oberst 1st oct. 1942. Head of NCO School Menthen (unsure of spelling due to very bad copy :? ). Ritt.(erkreuz)
Since there's only one Bayer with the rank of Oberstleutnant/Oberst who also is a RKT (according to Scherzer), this could very well be your man, yes?
Regards,
Krollspell

Next attempt to enhance his Bio

Could anybody confirm that he was DivFhr. of 20.PGD in 1944, and if yes: which were the exact dates?

Well, an Oberst Bayer took over Pz.Rgt. 16 on 11th September 1944 when 116. Pz.Div. was involved in the Battle of Aachen (see: Heinz-Günther Guderian Das letzte Kriegsjahr im Westen: Die Geschichte der 116. Panzer-Division - Windhund-Division, p.161). Maybe "our" Bayer?

Hi!
Could it be the same Oberst Johannes "Heinz" BAYER who led the Panzer-Regiment 27 (19. Panzer-Division) in July 1944 until 22 August 1944 (succeeded by Major Walter PÖSSL)?

Could it be the same Oberst Johannes "Heinz" BAYER who led the Panzer-Regiment 27?
No. "Heinz" is a short form of Heinrich, not Johannes. Johannes Bayer (born on 24 June 1900) was originally a Nachrichtenoffizier who served in OKH / In 7 before the war.
