Plot of 20th July 1944 'Master List'

#1

Post by Alecci » 31 Mar 2007, 18:11

In response to another thread posted in this section of the forum, I have attempted to create a ‘master list’ of conspirators involved with the resistance and uprising on 20th July 1944. So far the list only includes persons who had a military rank, as resistance within the Armed Forces has always been my particular point of interest.

The list is organized as follows:

SURNAME, First Name
Final Rank (Promotion Date), Position on 20th July 1944
Higher Awards (Award Date)
Date and Place of Birth
Date and Place of Arrest
Date of Expulsion from the Armed Forces, if any
Date of Sentence, if any
Date, Place and Type of Death

Some entries may contain errors or be incomplete, and any help to correct this is naturally much appreciated.

Some persons in this list are considered by some to not be involved with the resistance to Hitler. Some persons are listed because they, knowingly and willingly, followed and carried out the orders of the conspirators on 20th July 1944, whether they were actual members of the resistance or not.

Some persons are probably missing, and any additions are welcome.

Alecci -- Thanks for that excellent list.

From my notes, though the category is broader and includes civilians:

Arndt, Dr. Walther (1891-1944) -- physician; member of the German Zoological Society {executed 26 Jun 1944 following a trial before the People's Court for remarking during an air raid earlier that year: "This is the end of the Third Reich, and the guilty can now be brought to punishment." (Snyder Ency 10-11).}

Bavaud, Maurice -- {sentenced to death by the Reichsgericht 18 Dec 1939; executed in connection with assassination attempt at Munich 9 Nov 1938 on Adolf Hitler (Hitler's Justice p. 286).}
Beck, Ludwig (1880-1944) [Generaloberst] -- chief of the Army General Staff 1933-1938; anti-Hitler conspirator {attempted suicide 20 Jul 1944 at Berlin following the 20 Jul 1944 attempt on Hitler's life; given the coup de gras by arresting officers. (Encyclopedia of the Third Reich p. 74).}
Bello, Heinz (1920-1944) [Army Medical Corps Sergeant] -- executed 29 Jun 1944 on the machine-gun range at Berlin-Tegel for making anti-Nazi remarks while on duty as a fire warden. (Snyder Ency 22).}
Bernhardi, Robert [Lieutenant Colonel] -- {executed 8 Aug 1944 for treason following the 20 Jul 1944 attempt on Hitler's life (NYT 11 Jun 1946:9:1).}
von Bernsdorff, Graf -- Foreign Office {executed 23-24 Apr 1945 for treason following the 20 Jul 1944 attempt on Hitler's life (NYT 11 Jun 1946:9:1).}
Blumenthal, Hans-Jürgen Graf [Major] -- {executed 13 Oct 1944 for treason following the 20 Jul 1944 attempt on Hitler's life (NYT 11 Jun 1946:9:1).}
Bolz, Eugen -- President of Wuerttemberg (ret.) {executed 5 Jan 1945 for treason following the 20 Jul 1944 attempt on Hitler's life (NYT 11 Jun 1946:9:1).}
Bonhoeffer, Rev. Dietrich (1906-1945) -- anti-Nazi evangelical theologian; helped Jews escape to Switzerland {arrested 5 Apr 1943; hanged 9 Apr 1945 at Flossenbuerg for treason following the 20 Jul 1944 attempt on Hitler's life (NYT 11 Jun 1946:9:1; Encyclopedia of the Third Reich p. 98; Snyder Ency 35).}
Bonhoeffer, Klaus (1901-1945) -- Lufthansa director {convicted of treason in a Volksgericht ("People's Court") trial 2 Feb 1945; shot 23 Apr 1945 at Berlin for treason following the 20 Jul 1944 attempt on Hitler's life (NYT 11 Jun 1946:9:1; Encyclopedia of the Third Reich pps. 98-9; Snyder Ency 35).}

Does anyone know where to obtain a list of all the 4000 plus people arrested in the wake of the July Plot?

Kind regards

The above list is not complete even with regards to it only listing the resistance member who held a military rank. I have further infomation and updated on existing listings which I will provide here once the thread gets cleaned up.

I doubt there's a complete list of all 4,000+ arrests made in the wake of 20 July 1944 to be found anywhere. It's probably bound, however, to include those persons arrested in accordance with the family liability doctrine (Sippenhaft).
