Regarding the Heereslehrschmieden I have determined the following: there ere seven!

- Berlin I und II
- Hannover
- Königsberg
- Darmstadt
- München
- Brünn

Each Lehrgang consisted of 175 Schmiede, between 15 and 30 per Lehrschmiede. Normally there were run two Lehrgänge per Lehrschmiede per month

Neccessary to geht the appointment for these Lehrgänge:
- Gesellenzugnis
- skill to do a Hufeisen
- enough skills in reading, wrting and mathematics
- certificate of the Truppenführer of being ready to become an Unterführer

At the mobilistaion 4000 Beschlagsschmiede were called to the Feldheer, all had at least one successfull Lehrgang at one of the Lehrschmieden. Throughout the war 10,000 further candidates were commanded to these Lehrgänge.

All in all there 16,000 (including 2,000 reservists who participated the Lehrgänge in peace times) certificated men ready for the 11,000 Planstellen at the Unteroffiziers- and Feldwebellaufbahn as Beschlagsschmied.

Hannover was the only Lehrschmiede to be transfered from the city the the Truppenübungsplatz Bergen in 1943.

Heereslehrschmiede Berlin I was superior to all others, it had even an integral Klink, well known for its scientific efforts on topic tierärztliche Zahnheilkunde.

The coverage of the section
3) Heeresunteroffiziersschulen (HUS) der Infanterie / Heeresunteroffiziers-Vorschulen
will follow the numbering system which was established on 01.11.1944. This re-organisation resulted in HUS 1 - 19 .
Presented on the Lexikon der Wehrmacht (based on Tessin)
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gli ... rungUO.htm
The same structure will appear here with the next update. As the lineage of the most HUS was Heeresunteroffizier-Vorschule - Heeresunteroffizierschule xy [city] - HUS # , the former schools will be included under the header "HUS #" .

Separate HUS and Vorschulen will be listed on their own. Listed below.
As it appears very difficult to find personnel of this schools let's start with the schools at least :

HUS Berent (Westpreußen) , 1944 , from Vorschule
HUS Bergzabern, * 01.04.1942 , sept 1944 built : Btl. Wormuth / Kgr. Hagl [GM August Hagl]
HUS Düren , 1944 , (sept 44, Walküre)
HUS Ortelsburg , * 01.04.1942 , moved, 1944 : Ettlingen , (sept 44 Walküre)
HUS Freiwaldau , * 01.03.1944 , from Vorschule , moved : Striegau
HUS Marienwerder , * 01.10.1940 , moved aug 1944 : Colmar (disbanded 44)
HUS Wiener Neustadt , * 1941 , moved : HUS München, * 01.03.1942 , disbanded 01.04.1943
HUS Regenwurmlager-Meseritz , * 1942 , moved 15.09.1944 : Bev. General in Ungarn (disb. there)
HUS Saarlautern : * ? , sept 44 built : Rgt. Wegelein / Kgr. Jais
HUS Wetzlar , * oct 1942 , 01.04.1943 named HUS

RE : Infanterie - biggest section, the most problems, the most personnel

Some add & corr :

Schule III für Fahnenjunker der Infanterie , Potsdam (*10.06.1942 from Lehr.Grp. III / Lehr-Abt. 2 der Inf.S Döberitz)

1) Potsdam-Bornstedt , formed 10.06.1942 as Schule III für Offiziersanwärter der Infanterie
date of renaming (for all Offz.Anw.Schulen) into Schule III für Fahnenjunker : 23.04.1943

2) Kdr
01.10.1942 - 29.03.1943 O Friedrich-August Schack
-> removed from Kriegsschule Potsdam ; my interpretation is that all speaking of "Kriegsschule Potsdam" after 1.9.1939 is to read Fahnenjunkerschule.

Schack : http://www.camp198.fsnet.co.uk/General% ... Schack.htm
http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Per ... ckFA-R.htm

Insp.Chef
15.01.1941 - 30.04.1941 Maj (1.2.41) Wilhelm Knetsch
3) to cross out ; has to be added to Inf.S Döberitz

Kdr Lehrgruppe III (?)
01.03.1942 - 11.06.1942 O Oskar Döpping

01.03.1942 - 11.06.1942 O Oskar Döpping
4) double entry with KS Potsdam and Fhjschule III .

to cross out ; as the forming of Fhj-Schule III out of Lehrgruppe III / Inf.S Döberitz was in june 1942 first, Oberst Döpping has to be listed as Kdr Lehrgruppe III / Lehr-Abt 2 with Döberitz !

5) first hand account by Fahnenjunker-Unteroffizier Horst Fenge (at the age of 19 in 1945) :
http://www.homepage-europa.at/archiv/hp ... otsdam.htm

-> speaking of "Kriegsschule in Bornstedt" [= Fahnenjunkerschule III, Potsdam-Bornstedt]

Kdr
march 1945 Oberst Kühn

01.08.44 - ?? Maj d.R. Walter Elflein
6) Taktiklehrer at Fhj.Schule III, Potsdam
to cross out from KS Potsdam

RE : Fahnenjunkerschulen der Infanterie

The listing of the schools I - X has been re-checked [Tessin , cross-checking with LdW] .

There are two open points :

1) I , Dresden
Kdr

01.02.1941 - 05.08.1942 O / GM (1.5.42) Wilhelm Thomas
according to Tessin -> * 01.02.1942
do we have a typo here ?

2)
Schule IV für Fahnenjunker der Infanterie , Ohrdruf/Thüringen (*1942)
Kdr
10.06.1942 [01.02.] - 29.04.1944 O Werner Dürking
is it THORN ? moved ?
* 15.06.1942 , one Inspektion with 3 Schützen and 1 schwere Inspektion .

"Obscure unit" question of the day :)

Tessin is listing

Panzer-Ausbildungs-Batterie Wallachisch Meseritz

Anything known about that ? A guess - is it a training unit for the Wallonen ?

Thanks, Bernd

Artillerieschule Jüterbog
Kdr
00.10.1929 - 01.02.1933 O / GM (1.10.31) Friedrich von Boetticher
[last rank : General der Artillerie]

Kdr Schul-Lehrstab (Art.S II)
00.06.1944 - 00.12.1944 O Adolf Reinicke

Hörsaalleiter
00.00.1938 - 00.00.1940 Hptm Adolf Reinicke

http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Per ... nickeA.htm

Artillerie-Lehr-Regiment Jüterbog / Art.Lehr.Rgt.
Kdr II. Abt.
01.10.1934 - 01.05.1935 OTL Wilhelm Berlin
again
15.10.1935 - 01.05.1936 OTL Wilhelm Berlin

conflicting data about Kdre. Artillerie-Schule I and II :
Artillerieschule II , Jüterbog / Groß-Born :
10.10.1940 - 05.04.1943 GM / GL (1.3.42) Wilhelm Berlin
01.04.1942 - 05.04.1943 GM / GL (1.4.43) Friedrich Breith
Artillerieschule I , Berlin / Meißen :
02.01.1942 - 01.04.1942 O Friedrich Breith

05.04.1943 - 27.05.1944 GL Friedrich Breith
(m.d.F.b.) 02.07.1943 - 01.09.1943 GM Gerhard Graßmann
27.05.1944 - 08.05.1945 GL Helmuth Huffmann
As General der Artillerie Wilhelm Berlin appears quite clear to me
http://www.ritterkreuztraeger-1939-45.d ... ilhelm.htm
I take it that Genlt. Friedrich Breith was Kdr Art.S I throughout the time period
02.01.1942 - 27.05.1944
finally awarded the German Cross in Silver for that post.

of note !! : there are desastrous reviews for this book ; having had the possibility of reading pages via the link I tend to say it has passages which are ok - repeating and confirming info, especially the personnel I looked for - but it is a must only for those who want to have all books about the "Brandenburger"
Highly recommended - my first read years ago - is Spaeter's Brandenburger book which is excellent !!

The Bentzin work contains a passage about an aspect I heard of already :
Apparently Amt Abwehr II under top secret circumstances was training Ukrainian Nationalists (emigrants from allover Germany) since 1938 ! in the Chiemsee area (Bavaria).
Does anyone know more about that ?
Later many of those Ukrainians became members of Legionärs-Bataillon "Nachtigall".

In fall 1943 Banja Luka became the center for anti-partisan operations. During this period Pz.AOK2 (from August 1943 in charge of operations in central Yugoslavia) formed so-called Bandenjägerlehrgänge in Banja Luka for German and Croat troops. The training focused mostly on Volltarnung operations. The head of this partisan hunter training course was Hauptmann Konopacki while the specialist/instructors were Brandenburgers.

Aufklärungs- und Kavallerieschule Bromberg (Rinkau-Kaserne)

Taktiklehrer
01.07.1943 - 00.00.1944 Rittmeister Johann-Peter Radloff

(Stammtruppenteil : Kav.Rgt. 5, Stolp ; Bundeswehr service 1955-1970, Oberstleutnant i.G.)

source : "Der Husar", Heft III/2004 (thanks, J-H)

It is reported there that he was accompanying the Swedish Rittmeister Kuylenstierna on an information tour about modern cavalry in 1944.
A photo of Radloff, standing next to Kuylenstierna, at Bromberg, Rinkau-Kaserne (together with Kdr. Oberst von Woedtke and Adjutant Rittmeister Blum) is on page 101 of "...und die Aufklärer sind immer dabei", Munster, 2001 .
