Hi J.-H.,
I've found some info a while ago on this man, also a veteran of 2. Pz.Div...
14.06.1909 : born at Fürth, Bayern.
00.04.1929 : took up service : Inf.-Rgt. 21 (Nürnberg)
00.10.1930 : Infanterie-Schule Dresden
00.10.1934 : II./Schützen-Regiment 2 at Meiningen
then, I've got a hole in the timeline...
00.00.1900 : I./Schützen-Regiment 2 at Wien
00.00.1939 : Kompaniechef in Poland and France
00.00.1940 : Instructor for Schnelle Truppen at Döberitz
00.04.1942 : Kdr. II./Pz.-Gren.-Rgt. 901 - fights in Russia and Croatia
Nachfolger : Major ... Schöne
01.04.1944 : Regimentsführer.Lehrgang Truppenübungsplatz Bergen
00.05.1944 : Kommandeur zur Einarbeitungs als Regimentsführer (no idea what it means, some practical training I believe...)
00.08.1944 : Regiments-Kommandeur Pz.-Gren.-Rgt. 304 - in fights in Normandie
00.09.1944 : wounded, followed by a stay at Lazarett Meiningen
00.10.1944 - end : Kommandeur Heeres-Unteroffizier-Schule für Panzer-Grenadiere at Eisenach (according to another source, I believe it was this forum, he took up this command as Oberstleutnant in 00.02.1945)
00.05.1945 - 00.08.1945 : American and Brittish P.O.W.
00.00.1900 : took up service in the Bundeswehr - last rank : Oberst
31.12.1973 : died at München, Bayern
He was awarded with E.K. II, E.K. I, Panzerkampfabzeichen, DKiG, Verwundetenabzeichen im Schwarz and Eisernes Dreiblatt von Kroatien
That's all what I've got and needs to be verified...
Cheers,

Hellow Jan-Hendrik,
concerning Eisenach... I've checked a divisional history of the 21. Pz.-Div. (Neu) by Jean-Claude Perrigault and it lists Oberst Helmuth Zollenkopf in charge of this division (m.d.F.b.) for these dates: 25.01.1945 - 12.02.1945. He relieved Edgar Feuchtinger, who was to be courtmartialed... Zollenkopf would be relieved by Generalleutnant Werner Marcks, last commander of 21. Pz.-Div. Marcks was put in charge of the division on 10.02.1945 (same source). Von Luck in "Panzer Commander" places Marcks' arrival at the division in the early morning of 10.02.1945. Apparantely, von Luck considered Marcks as "ambitious, a hard man and ruthless in carrying out orders..." Other info on Oberst Hellmuth Zollenkopf while in command of the 21. Pz.-Div. are rather scarce...

Charles Steiner
