Leopold von Münchow was the Kommandeur Rückwärtiges Armeegebiet (Korück) 593 (früher 586). That is the reason why he stayed in Budapest because the Korück belonged to the hungarian capital in this time. He is missed since the 15.2.1945.

Conclusion : von Münchow was wearing the death head in remembrance of his Braunschweig service.
But, to not make this case easy :? - he is not wearing a Brunswick death head !! It's the Prussian version.
At the moment I just can presume that only this piece was available at that time.
Although Leopold v. Münchow was a Leutnant in Husaren-Regiment Nr. 5 in 1914, he finished WW1 as a Rittmeister in the 2. Leib-Husaren-Regiment Nr. 2 and hence that particular model of Totenkopf.

Glenn

Hello
I don' t think that he was Korück 593, because it was GLt. Krause (a source reads GM. Bormann......)
I have v. Münchow in 1944 in the IX. SS-Geb.K., who knows in which position and from/to when ?

Thanks for the information (and the link) on Leopold von Münchow's last command, Jan-Hendrik. Very interesting indeed. Also thanks to Ungvary, Glenn and Rossano for your input on this 10 year old post of mine.
Best regards,

I have found an additional bit of information on the Vermisstenbildlisten of the DRK.
The Oberstleutnant von Münchow, Leopold (4.3.1884) is listed in the 'Bildliste in Gefangenschaft Verschollener" as of 1949 in Bobruisk (KG 183)
