Thanks Stauffenberg II!

I'm convinced it's him: the portrait fits, as do the RK & DKG.

Problem solved.

Many thanks!

Met een hartelijke groet,

Hans

Hello Hans!

That is a great picture. Looking through Friedrich Ruge's book "Rommel in Normandy", I have pinpointed the date to May 30. The occasion was a demonstration of multiple rocket launchers and smoke projectors near Riva Bella. Ruge mentions that amongst those present were Salmuth, Dollmann, Krancke (you can see his shoulder on the extreme left of the pic), Kuntzen, Marcks, Freiherr von Funk and others.

It is a great relief that the mystery has finally been solved. Well done Stauffenberg II.

Regards,

VJK

I´m just speculating Hans!

Maybe the man behind Salmuth is his Chief of Staff (Rudolf Hofmann). I have a pic (again from VJK). I will attach. I think it is a younger (General Staff) General.

Then the man left to Dollmann could be his Chief of Staff (Pemsel) wearing his (mountain) cap. Would make sense. But we will never know because the man left to Dollmann is not visible.

Regards,

I have several other photographs of Hofmann (such as the one included), but I cannot say that I positively identify him on the picture. I don't rule out the possibility either, but I'm not convinced.

Cheers,

Hans

That was quick work everybody! Excellent fit for Meyer.
Suddenly, I cannot remember myself saying something about some guy Marcks or so? :D

For those in the Netherlands interested in this book about Rommel (it contains an awful lot of great pics as the one just posted here by Hans), a copy can be found at the library of the NIOD (Dutch war documentation institute).

Thanks for posting it Hans.

I know this picture from one of my books, unfortuneally without names.
But I guess it's Borrmann second from the left and right from him Presschef Dittrich, Hitler of course, and than v Brauchitsch.
The nearest General is v Schoberth.

I wont swear that it is not von Kleist, but I do not it looks like him. Sadly I have no information at all about the picture : circumstances, place or date. I was just hoping that some of you might recognise him.

It's Rommel. I have that same picture in a biography of him.

Looks like the "Winterschlacht im Osten 1941 to 1942" or "Frozen meat" ribbon in his button hole. If it were Rommel, by the time this medal was awarded, he would have gotten his Eichenlaub (20.03.41). And Swerter came on 20.01.42. True, sometimes he didn't wear his PLM, but rarely did he wear other campaign ribbons this way.

Cheers
Freiherr

Beppo,

Could you mention the biography on Rommel that includes this picture. I must say that I'm a bit doubtful about it being Rommel. I have never seen him wearing this kind of dust goggles. Normally we see him wearing his British safety goggles, but I have a number of pictures of him in France 1940 where he wears another pair of googles. However they are different from these.

Kind Regards
