... and to add to the confusion this picture. Rommel together with an officer (general?) with similar goggles as in the first picture. The caption reads El Alamein, October 1942. Although... I have a similar picture of Rommel (not showing the goggled officer though) stating 17 Febr. 1942 in Nordafrika.

Is perhaps Johannes Streich an option?

Cheers,

Hans

... or what about Wolfgang Fischer (no bad idea Stauffenberg II!), here with similar goggles...

Cheers,

Hans

I don't know anything about gogles, but from the facial features I would say Fischer is the closest.

Just my 2 cents!

Best Regards!

I don't think that it is either Streich or Fischer, as both had a chin cleft that is not visible in the subject. Crüwell had the correct chin, but the eyes are all wrong.

I think that Tunisia is the setting and early '43 is the time frame. The shot of Nehring that Steen posted is a good example of the dress of that time and it seems a good match with others in the subject photo. How about a visiting General from Berlin in Tunisia, early '43?

The group shot that Hans posted is interesting too. That's surely v.Ravenstein next to Rommel... making it '41...??

Von Bismarck had a really distinguishing face with a small nose :| - don't think he's the one.

I'm pretty sure that the goggled officer next to Rommel in the photo "Rommel15" is his Chief of Staff, Siegfried Westphal.

A further participant ... a further opinion. My guess would have been Mellenthin. OK, I surrender!

Btw: Found another Africa General. It´s Gen. Maj. Friedrich Krause. But watching his pic at http://www.houterman.htmlplanet.com he is not the man shown in the pics, either.

I've trailed through everything. It looks most like Crüwell to be honest, you're right about the nose. If you look at the eyes & ears, Crüwell's the most likely, although I'm not entirely put off the v. Kleist idea...

In that other picture from Africa, from left to right it's Bayerlein, Westphal, Rommel.

Gareth,

I'll go along with Rommel & Westphal on the group photo, but not with Bayerlein. It sure ain't him. Can't identify him positively right now (don't know much about the Afrikakorps, unfortunately...). But it's the same officer as shown on this picture between Rommel and Italian general Azzi.

Cheers,

Hans

Dolmetscher

Post by Glenn2438 » 13 Nov 2003 22:14

This officer appears to be a Sonderführer (K) or Special Leader in the rank of Hauptmann. Note the coloured threads on his shoulder boards. Most likely a Translator (Dolmetscher). The senior translator on the Afrikakorps staff was one Sonderführer Freiherr von Neurath.

Glenn

Is it just me who thinks that the officer on the left side of the general officer (i.e. right side of the picture) in "Rommel in field.jpg" looks more than just a little bit like Colonel (GS) Fritz Bayerlein?

My humble opinion...

Glenn: Thanks for the info. Very helpful!

Alecci: Yes, it's just you. I don't see any resemblance at all.

Cheers,

Hans
