That photo does not appear to be Mantel, as it does not match Mantel's bio. The officer in the picture is not wearing the ribbons of the Bavarian Military Merit Order or the Prussian Red Cross Medal.

Thanks. I was obviously not aware of the old post/thread. Now I am puzzled. Like You me too have the same book where the caption reads "Gen. Mantell" and as far as I know there was only one Beamter i. Gen.Rang with that (similar) name and this is just Gen.Richter E. Mantel.
I know nothing about (and I am not interested in) awards but why should caption give a wrong name ? I believe that the photo was taken at war end and maybe he or somebody took away his awards ??? If not Mantel who else is he ? Anybody has another photo of Mantel to make comparison ?

Not withstanding the awards, the uniform does not fit for a General in the Truppen-Sonderdienst. Ernst Mantel was promoted to Generalrichter in the TSD in April 1945, yet this gentleman is wearing the uniform of a general officer equivalent in the Wehrmacht military administration and not the uniform of a general officer in the TSD.
