Pilz' Karte reads : Schulgefechtschiessen in Kielce 1939
If caption is OK Pilz was Oberst and Schwandner was Hptm. (so GL. and Maj. wrong…….)
(and must have been when Pilz was Kdt. d. OFKdtr. 540 in Kielce about end 1939)
If on the contrary Maj. and GL. are OK then it must have been much later (but if so I doubt that he was still in Kielce…….). But in both cases I find no connection between both officers. Anybody knows better ?
Schwandner here on the right is the older brother of Gen.d.I. M.Schwandner: Wilhelm Schwandner (1877-1961). In 1939 (Photo), Major d.R. Wilhelm Schwandner was Div.Stab z.b.V. 425, serving as Ia.
After retiring as Major after WW1, he was reactivated and served until June 1942. He was Major d.R. until promoted to Oberstlt d.R. a few months before retirement in 1942. Interestingly, the handwriting on the back is Maximilian Schwandner's. I know it better than anyone alive :) Would be curious where the photo is from and if there are more, seems to be from an album.

Thanks !
So Wilhelm. I too have him as Ia Div. 425, but then no more.
Sure that he was Res.Offz. ? In the PV./HPA I found a Maj. z.V. Schwandner (in july 41 he was in the Fhr.Res.)
If "mine" was Wilhelm, do You know his further assignments until july 41 ?
If instead "Your" Wilhelm was really Res.Offz., do You know his further assignments until june 42 ?
Maybe 6.40 - 8.40 Ia Kdr. Ers.Tr.(Ers.Div.) 100 ?
Then maybe from 8.40 Ia Div. 402 ?
Rgds.
P.S.: Do You (or does anybody) know who was 20.6 - 1.8.40 m.F.b. d. Div. 402 ?

Hi Rossano,

To avoid confusion: the other Schwandner in the infantry who was Major at a similar time (though not in 1939 yet) was Eduard S., son of Gen.d.Inf. Maximilian S. - much younger than Wilhelm (Wilhelm is in the photo in question). He was Major i.G. from Apr 1, 1941 through Aug 1, 1943 (promotion).

Wilhelm S. was assigned to (WAST data):
01 Jun 1936, IR40, Major d.R. i.I.R.40
25 Oct 1939, Div.Stab z.b.V. 425, Ia
26 Mar 1940, 358. Inf. Div., IIa
05 Oct 1940, Inf.Ers.Btl.30/Görlitz
04 Nov 1940, Inf.Ers.Btl.468/Füssen
01 July 1941, z.V., Major d.R.z.V.
19 July 1941, Ldschtz.Btl.869, Kdr
01 Mar 1942, Inf.Ers.Btl.468
01 Apr 1942, Oberstleutnant d.R.z.V.
30 Jun 1942, end (at age 65)

The top picture has been recently auctioned in ebay but no identification was given. It shows a general that, IMHO, resembles a lot with the general on the right of the other picture.
I hope that the mentioned picture may help to finally ID this elusive general.
Cheers.
