LW General ID 43/44 in Italy

#1

Post by Elwyn W » 28 Dec 2008, 05:15

This is proving to be very hard:

from Budesarchiv
LW general supposedly 3.44 near Nettuno reviewing what was clearly the 3rd Italian San Marco Division (there were additional closeup's of the Italian troops)
not Mahnke, Mälzer -- the obvious ones -- not v Bülow, Krziwanek, Funcke, Schuetzek, Weiner, Schilffarth, v Hippel, Kuderna (very skinny man) or Merz!!

Then maybe the same gen but from 43 in Monte Cassino

Ernst Müller, CdS LF2?

Hello,
Drew a blank, could not be Müller, ears don't fit. I thought it looked like a war-time Georg Teschner, he roamed everywhere but that is the wildest stab in the dark.

By the way, do you have a Kuderna pic?

Here's the only pic of Kuderna I have.
Reasonable guess that it was Teschner. But I guess we won't know for sure until better pics come along.

The caption from Bundesarchiv about it being near Nettuno is dubious at best. While it was true the 3rd Italian Div San Marco was the first of the 4 RSI divisions to finish training and returned to Italy, this did not take place until late June 44. By this time, operation Shingle and the fighting at Anzio and Nettuno were over. San Marco was assigned to Korps Lombadia up in Liguria. But I found very little involvement of LW elements up there. :(

Hi Guys, back home in the Fuehrerbunker.
As Gareth pointed out Teschner there is a good resemblance, even
though Biblios pic of him is 1935 or before. The date of March 44 has
him as Cmdr Luftschutz Bde 1,Ploesti Rumania.
GM Julius Kuderna at the same date was Cmdr 5 Flak Div-also in Rumania.

Crazy idea. What about Walter Barenthin?

Think I've solved this. I believe it's none other than

Georg Rieke

Feedback?

Some additional tid-bits:

Reike was Kmdr 1 FL-Ausb-Div 12.11.43 - 1.5.44 before he had the title of Standing Rep of the LW Personnel Office. Unfortunately, there was absolutely no information on 1 FL-Ausb-Div other than its 5 Flieger Rgts based in or around Paris/St Cloud. However, it is interesting to note that Reike's successor as Kmdr 1 FL-Ausb-Div 01.05.44 - 01.06.44 was Funcke while Funcke was at the same time Kmdr Luftflottentruppen Luftflotte 2. So perhaps a lot of the logistics and Reike's involvement had to do with commiting LW Sturm Div 19 and 20 to deal with the Anzio landing.

Secondly, 1 FL-Ausb-Div was itself renamed from 10 Fl Div. According to http://www.ww2.dk, 10 Fl Div had a Fliegeranwärter-Bataillon "Monte Rosa" in St. Brieuc. Any relation to 4th Italian Alpine Div Monte Rosa? 8O 8O 8O
