Oberst Siegfried von Blanckensee (1892-1945)
Re: Looking for foto of GM Siegfried von Blanckensee
Hi Jake,
Just a small correction - Saldus is in Latvia, not Lithuania.
Very best regards,
VJK

Hello Jake V
Excellent posting, thank you !
The 1) version of Jimramov (actually Czech Republic) is definitely mistaken. Sedliste (not Sedliske) is a part of this small town. The German translation is SEDLISCHT. It doesn't match with
2) Saldus (in German Frauenburg / Kurland now in Latvia). This town was at the front line during all the fights in Kurland. The local commander Generalmajor Küpper was put on tril at Riga and hanged together with SS Obergruppenführer Jeckeln and other Wehrmacht's generals. The largest german war cemetery is located at Saldus.
Siegfried von Blanckensee was the regimental commander of the 113th Security Regiment part of the Divisionsstab z.b.V. 300 (Divisional Staff for special purposes Nr. 300) located most probablely in or around Frauenburg.
My conclusion is B. commited suicide after the German capitulation in Kurland Pocket (like General Erpo von Bodenhausen or Obergruppenführer Krüger).
Best regards.
Georges

Guys, if the Volksbund says he died in Mähren, why do you look for a regiment in Kurland? You don't need to be a Sherlock Holmes to imagine the info in Bradley must be wrong. And voilà, Blanckensee did not command Sicherungsregiment 113, he commanded Landesschützenregiment 115:
THAT regiment was indeed in Mähren in May 1945. And my next question: does anybody seriously believe that the unknown commander of an obscure Landesschützenregiment would have been promoted to GM? The Volksbund lists him as an Oberst, and I don't know of any original document that could confirm a promotion. Yes, he was due for a planmäßige Beförderung in April 1945, but not every officer who heranstand did really receive one.

There are times in history when staying neutral means taking sides.

From another Karteikarte:
Maybe this was Fryšták in Okres Zlín? Freistadt in Oberösterreich doesn't fit.

Hello
In Niederschlesien there was Freystadt (in german)
By the way, I have registered a note (I only added "from HPA", but I don´t remember from which list or doc. or roll) confirming his promotion to GM per 20.04.45
Rgds.
