Number Of Wehrmacht Generals

Post by AlifRafikKhan » 06 Oct 2009 20:14

Is there any precise information about the number of German generals who served in the Third Reich (1933-1945), how many in the Heer, Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, and SS?

Thanks you in advance,
Alif

For the Ludtwaffe:
1 RM : Göring
5 FM: Kesselring, Sperrle, Milch, v. Richthofen,v. Greim
12 Generaloberste
1O4 Generale der Flieger etc
72 Generalleutnants
213 Generalmajore
The problem is that some of these came from the army;ex: Kesselring, even Göring was first General der Infanterie, and there is a danger of double counting or even triple counting; Otto von Stülpnagel was first General der Infanterie, then General der Flieger and then again General der Infanterie :?
I don't think you ever will have a definite number:t he different sources are contradicting,I am sure an other member will give you other figurees :?
For the army I have 318 General der Infanterie, Artillerie etc
If you will googling on Generale des Heeres, you will find a lot of information .
For the SS (probably Waffen SS ) there are also sources to find by googling; for the SS there is also a problem: a lot of dignitaries of the regime held the honorary rang of general of the SS
I will look for something on the Kriegsmarine
Cheers

Thank you very much ijadw! :) at least we know now the number for the Luftwaffe generals (407). Yes it will be a hard one to count all Wehrmacht generals, especially if certain people moved from one unit to the other, not including the honorary rank (especially in the SS)...

What about the 'additional' equivalent ranks like Generalarzt or Generalrichter, is it also included?

Hello everyone, The total number of general officers of all ranks was 2733 for the army and 666 for the air force. The number of full generals in the air force was only 84. I don't know where the number 407 came from. Harry

Hello again, correction to my post here. I did not mean full generals, I meant to say all generals, from gen-maj to field-Marshals. Harry

I counted again :the Luftwaffe rangliste for 1945 ig giving 104 full generals ,117 lieutenant generals and 214 major generals, thus with 1 RM ,5 FM and 12 GO I have a total of 453 .
The problem is I have the Luftwaffen Rangliste 1945 (by Klaus Patzwall from1986 ) and the Rangliste der Generale der Deutschen Luftwaffe (20 april 1945 ) by Rudolf Absolon (1984) and of course they are contradicting .

other problems:retired generals called up again;characterisierte generals(honorary),generals who were promoted posthumously, generals of whom the date of promotion in unknown :ex :von Hauenschild:lieutenant general, promoted at the end of the war to general der panzertruppen, but exact date is unknown .

another problem:some members on the forum do not consider a Oberführer as a general, but as a senior colonel ,like a brigadier in the British Army

I have a Otto THOMANN (born 25-O2-94 )as the last promoted Generalarzt: 01-08 -44 (2).

For von Sponeck (not included in the number of Generalmajore) I have the following:
Mit Wirkung vom 1. April 1938 werden ernannt : Die Generalmajore ........
Graf von Sponeck bei den Offizieren z.b.V. des Reichsministers der Luftfahrt (Sonst. Offz .) zum Kommandeur im Luftgau VII

I have sadly nothing on von Imhoff
Btw (of topic) I am trying :) to reading a Tagesbefehl from Göring, dated from 26 september 1936,written in Gothic letters, didn't know they were still using that in 1936

The bio of Generalarzt der Reserve Prof. Dr. Tammann is here:
http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... &start=225

He is not identical to Generalarzt Dr. Otto Thomann !!

BTW:
Please do not forget Ministerialdirektoren rep. Ministerialdirigenten
(for example the Leiter der Heeresplankammer Ministerialdirigent Hugo von Langendorff; or the
Heeresfeldpostmeister Ministerialdirektor Karl Ziegler; or the
Bevollmächtigter für Sprengstoffphysik im RFR Ministerialdirigent Prof. Dr. phil. Dr. rer. nat. Erich Schumann) or
the Ministerialdirigent, later Generalapotheker Dr. Werner Knoll - or
the Heeresarchivdirektor - later Ministerialdirigent - Karl Ruppert (1886 - 1953).

and please do not forget the
Kriegs- resp. Militärverwaltungschefs and the
Kriegs- resp. Militärverwaltungsvizechefs !!!!

and also the Oberreichskriegsanwalt resp. Reichskriegsanwalt (equivalent General(stabs)richter),
for example the Oberkriegsgerichtsrat im Generalsrang (later Oberreichskriegsanwalt) Alfred Schrag
and the
Senatspräsident beim Reichskriegsgericht (equivalent Generalstabsrichter),
for example Dr. Friedrich Neuroth [June 1944 finally released as Senatspräsident im Range eines Generals der Infanterie ! ], also Dr. Otto Neumann and Dr. Ernst Reuter

and also
the Präsident der kriegsgeschichtlichen Forschungsanstalt des Heeres (equivalent Generalmajor),
Prof. Wolfgang Foerster
