Heeresgruppe A
Heeresgruppe A
Hi,
Can anyone please name the commanders of Stab Anton (24 Apr 1942 - 22 May 1942) and Küstenstab Asow (22 May 1942 - 7 Jul 1942). Both commands were cover names for Heeresgruppe A which was re-formed on 7 July 1942.
Also can someone confirm that Hubert Lanz filled in for von Kleist as Oberbefehlshaber from June 1943 - July 1943 and give exact dates.
Best regards,
VJK

Re: Heeresgruppe A
I think I can help with Lanz.
His HPA file states
25.06.1943 HGr A (Vert d b? Kom Gen)
and Bradley states
25.06.1943 - 26.07.1943 mFb XXXXIX Geb Korps
I think he was attached to H Gr A to replace a Korps commander who had gone on leave
Regards
John
ps Was there a commander or just a staff headed by von Greiffenberg?

Re: Heeresgruppe A
Hello VJK,
For what it's worth to you (I assume you've probably checked it out on the web), here's the info I found on the Bundesarchiv website (may serve others).
Everything points to the fact that List was named OB on 10.07.1942.
I think John's (histan) question hits the mark. There probably was only a chief-of-staff (Gen.Lt. Hans von Greiffenberg) in preparation for the commander to come. Maybe why they called it Stab Anton and Küstenstab Asow.
In case you haven't checked it, Bradley's Die Generale Des Heeres mentions Obst. Heinz von Gyldenfeldt as Ia im Generalstab der Heeresgruppe A on 05.05.1942.
Best !

http://www.bundesarchiv.de/aktuelles/au ...

Re: Heeresgruppe A
Thank you for your help gents. I think you are most probably right regarding Greiffenberg. As regards Lanz, his HPA file entry seems to indicate that he was appointed as temporary OB of Heeresgruppe A whilst filling in for Konrad as Kom.Gen. XXXXIX Gbgs.K.

I think his HPA file shows that he was attached to H Gr A to temporarily command a Korps, it states Kom Gen rather than OB, and that Bradley identifies the Korps as XXXXIX Geb Korps.

Re: Heeresgruppe A
Lanz is impossible, how should he have ranked Jaenecke? But Ruoff was acting OB for Kleist from 21.03.1943 while the latter was on leave. Does anybody know when he returned? He must have returned in mid-April at the latest, possibly after three or four weeks.
There are times in history when staying neutral means taking sides.
