Hello James,
You picked a good time to ask, because I did a census a few days ago. The numbers are as follows, with breakdown by branches.
German Army - KIA- 229 KIAW - 59 MIA - 30
German Air Force KIA - 22 KIAW- 3 MIA - 5
SS KIA - 85 KIAW - 10 MIA - 14
NAVY KIA- 16 KIAW - 0 MIA - 2
TOTALS KIA 352 KIAW 72 MIA 51 FINAL TOTAL 475

RUSSIA ARMY KIA - 257 KIAW- 71 MIA - 22
RUSSIA AIR FORCE KIA- 10 KIAW - 3 MIA - 0
RUSSIA NAVY KIA - 6 KIAW - 1 MIA - 0
RUSSIA NKVD KIA - 6 KIAW - O MIA- 0
TOTALS KIA - 279 KIAW - 75 MIA - 22 FINAL TOTAL 376
The german figures are, I would estimate 90% perfect. I know I am missing info on some general officers. With the Russian numbers I would think I have between 60 and 80 per cent of total casualties. Even the Russians do not know their general casualties, or as they call it "irrevocable losses". And these numbers do not include the at minimum 94 generals executed, mainly for losing battles, 25 who died in accidents, such as air crashes or vehicle accidents. All the other countries are far behind, but if you want I can post numbers on them.

at least 11 Russian generals died in Russian prisons or camps during the war.
The 2 best books on Russian losses are Fallen Soviet Generals, by Aleksandr Maslow, and Sacrifice of the Generals, by Michael Parrish.

I could go on with this, but I think this is the information you asked for.
Best Regards,, Harry

Except for the United States, these numbers are far from complete. I have many names missing years of birth and death. And sometimes I have the year of death, but don't know if the general died on the battlefield or of illness. Any help on the obscure generals from other members would be appreciated by me, (and by Steen too).

Would you like the numbers for the ww1 Azerbaijani army ? :D

French MacLean, in his excellent book on the subject, Quiet Flows the Rhine, lists a total of 167 General officers of the German Heer as being killed (+suicide) during WWII. I'd be interested in comparing his list to yours Harry.

Hello JC,
LT-Col McLean wrote a great book, and I have a signed copy. You wrote he lists 167 generals, and so he does on page 3, but on page 2 he has the number of generals kia & kiaw as 223.
Overall, he skipped or overlooked many generals. On page 3 he writes "This work will focus on those general officers who were in command of divisions, corps or armies". Therefore I will stand with my numbers.
Reagrds, Harry

I just finished typing the KIA generals, and it seems to be lost. Guess I'll have to do it again.

Since you have the book, just give me the ones MacLean doesn't include.
