That's how they portrayed it in the movies. Which should obviously be questionable.

My expertise in ww2 ends in 45, but he would have had to smuggle it in somehow...they allies were pretty good at searching their prisoners so I doubt he snuck it past them.

So it was probably his wife or a guard.

Long time ago I read that one of the guard officers had more or less befriended him, and had smuggled the pill to him. There also is a photo where he winked at the surveillance camera, right before he died. He once complained "I should have surrendered to the Russians, they either would have shot me on the spot, or made a hero out of me". Just some trivia. HN.

I think HaEn may be right. The two culprits seem to be an American officer who liked Göring because he was also a hunter, and a German Priest. Irving writes a very compelling case with lots of good original research about the case in his book about Göring, which can be bought used for a very reasonable price.

My favorite qoutation is "A Reichsmarschall should die by the bullet".

The cyanide was hidden in a bullet case.

One of my favorite things involving Göring was when he first surrended, an American took his bayton away, Göring said something like, "You cant take that away, thats a symbol of my authority", the American said, "You dont have any authority anymore".

I just find it kind of funny...

Nothing personal mike, but i can't see the humour in that. After all, a Nazi or not, he didn't built his career selling peanut butter. And after all that happened, a 20-25 year old soldier tells him that he doesn't have any kind of power anymore. A tragic end, wouldn't you say?

Göring's death

Göring surrendered to a US jewish LT. The SS were hunting him down. High ranking US officers wined and dined Göring
until a General heard about it and ordered a stop to the festivities.
The British insisted Göring be hung even though he was dead, and so he was.

Dear Mottii,
Do you mean that Göring was hung even though he was dead? I think that is just a lie. Even if the allies weren´t the good guys they want us to believe, I don´t think that they did such tasteless things. The important thing was to kill the ex-Reichsmarschall and if he was already dead... thanks for doing the dirty work.
I have read quite many books about Göring and according to the serious ones, he was quite a charming man (we he wanted to be) and of course he could charm the guards. When he finally got off the drugs, he was a brilliant intellect and funny.

The sentence was death by hanging. The British insisted this be done even though he was dead. They did not want
him to cheat the hangman entirely.

I wouldn't mock him for his drug addiction. After he was shot by German police in the crotch, his friends had to hide him for a time without medical treatment, and the wound festered. The morphine family drugs that he used for the pain caused an addiction that they would in anyone. He finally was checked into a Swedish assylum, where he was pronounced cured by a Dr. Lindstrom.

This doctor also kept notes of his ravings, which include Goering's conviction that Father Abraham was trying to bribe him to leave nazism in return for 5 camels and a virgin.

Wasn't there any inquiry about the way he got the cyanide?
Seems strange!

Is either the bullet case or given by an American documented?

Having dealt with prisoners, they put stuff, especially small things in the most "intimate" places!

Many interesting theories.

_My_ state of knowledge is that Göring received the cyanide hidden in a piece of soap secretely given to him by Erich von dem Bach-(Zelewski).

Feel free to correct me.
