I am looking for more information and especially about pictures of Hauptmann/Major Otto Wendig ( Artillerie-Regiment 21 - 21. Infanterie-Division. Awarded with Knights Cross. Survived war and after lived for some years in Germany. There is a link to a document http://www.kreis-angerburg.de/ahb/ahb19_a.pdf , where in page 13 you could find his name.
Some info is in "Die Geschichte der 2. Infanterie-Division", but not much.
Perhaps also more info and pictures about Major Siegfried Schaper (GR3) and Fritz Lemke.

Re: 21. Infanterie-Division - Major Otto Wendig
Hello Basenji,
Otto Wendig never received the Knight's Cross, but he did receive the German Cross in Gold (Deutsches Kreuz in Gold). The award date was 30.09.1944 and he was a Major in command of III./AR 21 at the time.
Regards,
Krollspell

Re: 21. ID - Major Siegfried Schaper & Hauptmann Fritz Lemke
Siegfried Schaper received the Ritterkreuz posthumously on 20.10.1944, having been killed the same day at Ergeme, nw of Valka in Latvia. Last rank was Major, commanding GR 3.
Schaper also received the Deutsche Kreuz im Gold on 11.06.1942 as an Oberleutnant commanding 5./IR 3. He also received a Nennung im Ehrenblatt des Heeres on 07.09.1944.
Fritz Lemke received the Ritterkreuz on 16.02.1944 as a Hauptmann in command of II./GR 3. Lemke had also received the Deutsche Kreuz im Gold on 05.11.1942 as an Oberleutnant in command of 7./IR 45.
Fritz Lemke was killed just four days after Siegfried Schaper, on 24.10.1944 at Valka, Latvia.
It must have some hard fighting days in october 1944 for Grenadier-Regiment 3, losing both the regimental CO as well as one of the batallion commanders within days of each other, both men being RKT and all...

Re: 21. Infanterie-Division - Major Otto Wendig
Yes, I ve made the mistake with Wendig's award. But all the information can be found in the Internet or in the book about 21.ID.
21. Infanterie-Division had great loses mainly at the Wolchov / Leningrad front and such situation happened quite often. It seems, that those guys ( of 21. ID) were among the toughest in Wehrmacht.

Reason: 21. Infanterie-Division - not 21 Infanterie / 21. ID - not 21 ID
